This blissful Katoomba retreat is a fully renovated home built in 1898 in one of Katoomba's best streets. It offers every modern luxury combined with 19th Century charm and 21st Century sustainability.
We are located in a quiet-ish street with cafes, galleries and escarpment walks within five minutes. A short walk to the main town centre and about 25 minutes walk from the station, with a bus stop directly outside the front gate. The spectacular Echo Point and Three Sisters are at the end of the street - a 20 minute walk or five minute drive. Five minutes to Leura's wonderful shopping! Directly opposite the house is the famous Swiss Cottage restaurant, and nearby is the indulgent Yindi Day Spa.
Explore all this world-heritage listed region has to offer from this centrally-located cottage.
My guests are spoiled guests. Enjoy local wine on arrival, chocolates by your bed and our indulgent breakfast in the garden ($14) is famous! The Sydney Morning Herald is delivered to you with breakfast via ipad SMH app. You will be provided with soft eco-bamboo towels and fresh linen or satin sheets - your choice! The main guest room is very spacious with a generous ensuite "wet room" featuring a massage shower with luxurious aromatherapy oil. A carbon filter ensures your shower is pure chemical-free water. Or, in the main bathroom, a brand new deep bath has been recently installed - open the French doors and look out over the garden while you enjoy your bath! (It's very private and French bath salts are provided.)
The home is heritage listed but it has a contemporary style inside - you won't find the usual Katoomba chintz here! The emphasis is on good design combined with unusual antiques and objects collected from around the world as well as original artworks by local artists. 19th Century character is retained with an open fireplace, polished floorboards, wood stoves, intricate fretwork and lead light windows throughout the house.
We are fully solar powered with 22 panels supplying the grid. A 10,000 litre water tank, on-site composting and organic permaculture vegetable gardens help us live sustainably. The garden provides organic produce for guests' breakfasts. Wherever possible, only environmentally friendly cleaning products are used. Floor to ceiling insulation means the house is around 7-10 degrees cooler inside in summer without the need for air conditioning.
But no modern comfort is sacrificed - stay warm in winter with central heating and electric blankets, cool in summer with air conditioning if you need it, safe and sound with a modern security system, in touch with wireless internet and completely catered for with Smeg kitchen appliances, Nespresso coffee machine and a new dishwasher. Feel free to use the laundry facilities.
A beautiful garden with a large reflection pond and 100 year old tree ferns is home to native birds and possums. A sunny front porch is perfect for early morning coffee and a magic deck sweeps around the back and side of the house which makes sipping a regional chardonnay at sundown a must.
There are two bedrooms, one with ensuite. The main bedroom is very large and has a double brass bed with French doors leading to a private balcony. The second bedroom ($60 a night and available only if the main bedroom is booked) is also charming with French doors and a lovely old French provincial antique bed. The separate main bathroom is huge with a faux fireplace and pressed metal walls. There are two living rooms one with satellite TV and fantastic stereo. Both bedrooms have a CD player - although we know everyone brings their iPod!
A local bus stops right outside the front gate and sightseeing buses are also available from the top of Katoomba Street. They take you to Echo Point, the theme park Scenic World, and Leura Cascades. But I can arrange a private sight seeing tour in a convertible which will take you to the places the other tourists don't go! Check my guidebook for local attractions.
I live here with my two beautiful, gentle, very friendly dogs Oi and Madison, but the house can be split into two private areas with separate entry if you wish. See you soon! Jilea.
