The Historic Lodge, Boatshed , Cottage & unique “Glamping” units - Gypsy Caravans, Safari tents, Treehouse & Boatcabin are set in 2 acres of creative, tropical, water-front gardens, rich in bird life - Enjoy nature on the river, in stylish comfort!

The space

The Jade House is a delightful, private cottage overlooking the famous Hongi Hika Pa site, a tranquil river and the Keri Keri Inlet. This historic house is set in a secluded corner of the beautiful, mature gardens of Pagoda Lodge, with rare trees and contemplative garden ornaments including stupas and life-sized Buddhas. The sweeping Pagoda Roof reflects it’s ancient Chinese history, as it was built by an eccentric Scotsman to house a priceless collection of Jade from China in the 1930’s.

The bedroom/living room has subtle Asian décor and a queen bed. There is a separate fully equipped kitchen and small bathroom with toilet and shower. The deck surrounds three sides of the house and has superb river, inlet and forest views.
Below is a patio with gas barbeque, jetty with kayaks and nearby swimming hole.

Interaction with guests

Some guests like privacy, while others like interaction and guidance on local attractions and events. We are happy to help when asked.

Other things to note

The Pagoda Lodge Estate comprises 2 acres of gardens and mature trees. There are creative, multi-tiered grounds offering many private and tranquil spaces. There is a gentle flowing river and wide views to the Inlet and adjacent, large Historic Pa Site. As such, we have plentiful and varied bird-life. Please respect our wildlife and do not feed the ducks.
The river is a fish reserve, so no fishing allowed. No children in the old boat shed (lower level) and no swimming without supervision of parents.
Many thanks

Stephen actively communicated via email prior to our arrival and provided a personal tour of the facilities and house. He also took time to explain what activities and restaurants we should include into our itinirary. A full day sailing trip and fish and chips in manganui were superbe.

We enjoyed the quietness and surrounds so much we forgot to leave and stayed another night. Very clean with all that is needed for a few days away. Lovely view of river from deck watching the paddle boarders come up the river. Stephen very friendly and helpful. Close to some good walks and restaurants.

Jade House is a nice wee cottage in a garden setting with glamping and other camping opportunities. It was great to stay there and see and hear all the wildlife and the different plants. Stephen was welcoming and gave us the opportunity to use the outdoor hot bath facility which was fun to do one night. The Pagoda Lodge grounds are very close to the Stone Store - there is a bridge over the stream that takes you to the Pa site with the Stone Store just beyond that. Kerikeri shops are about 3km up the road in the other direction. We stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed being there.

Pure tranquility! Such a beautiful place close to nature just a few minutes out of Kerikeri. We stayed in the cottage with Riverview for Christmas and found some lovely decoration and homemade cookies on Christmas day - very much appreciate it! Definitely recommendable!

The Jade House was a lovely break from our campervan for a couple of nights, beautiful peaceful surroundings and an easy walk away from two great restaurants - if you stay here you must eat at 'food at wharepuke'. Stephen and his wife were really lovely and very helpful, booking us on tours and telling us what was available locally.

The owners, Kathy and Stephen Frewen, spent more than 20 years in Asia and were immediately drawn to the harmonious balance of “earth, wind and water”. The pagoda roofs, the variety of rare and mature trees, the tranquil river and the abundant bird life all create a certain magic, now enhanced by the serene Buddhas from Borobudur.
