Description

The space

Perched high on a dune, with a breathtaking 200 degree view of the Indian Ocean and 300m from a private beach - this is the ideal haven to get away from it all.

Note that due to being away from it all, the road and amenities might feel too rustic for some travellers, with water from a borehole and cooking on a gas grill and stove, but perfect for eco-tourists like myself.

The house is designed to let the breeze through to keep it cool - some guests don't like the fact that insects and sometimes even a squirrel can visit.

Although it's only 30km away from the Inhambane Airport and only 3km away from Tofo beach (with it's markets, bars, restaurants, surfing and famous diving reefs), this house is completely private, with hardly any other houses as far as the eye can see.

The house has a very open/spacious feel, with spectacular views from each area, even the room overlooking the inland palm groves. The spacious veranda, overlooking the ocean, is the ideal place to laze away the afternoon in the shade and at night time the stars light up the sky.

The house has 8 beds. It has 2 main rooms with double beds (that can be moved apart) and 4 single beds in the open loft area. Max 8 people.

The house is located on the outskirts of the Tofinho suburb of Tofo Beach town, 30km from Inhambane province in Mozambique.

Guest access

-You will need a proper 4x4 for the last few hundred meters. Some guests without 4x4 chose park close by and walk the last few hundred meters, but that's too much effort for lazy holiday-makers like myself.
-No fires/braaing, only use the provided gas cooking. Be very careful when smoking not to cause a fire hazard
-GPS Coords: (phone number hidden)

Interaction with guests

It's my holiday home and I live in Joburg, but the friendly housekeeper, Franciso, will check in daily and the manager, Orlando, will come and say hi, and see that you're looked after (let him know if you run into any problems). Also, the guards, Ricardo and Antonio, don't speak english, but will help where they can.

Just note that is still a self-catering set-up, and does not have all the services of a fancy hotel.

The friendly cleaner and handy man, Francisco, will help where he can. A tip will be highly appreciated, about $3-4 per recommended.

The neighborhood

What's not to love!

-The reefs and marine life is world famous (think Manta Reef and the whale shark snorkel expeditions).
-The local people are really friendly.
-A lot of natural beautify and a unique character

Getting around

It's a bit tricky if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle for the last few hundred meters.

Some guests without 4x4s park a few hundred meters away from the house where it's not too sandy.

Public chaps (taxis) go up to Tofo beach (3km from my place).

Other things to note

Feel free to ask me any questions about the place and area, especially if you have not been in Mozambique before.

Awesome house on the top of a dune overlooking the ocean. The house has all the basics for preparing meals and secluded vibe for those seeking a quiet escape and privacy!

Jacques was an incredible host - he was extremely responsive and helpful. He responded quickly to questions, sent detailed instructions and even helped us arrange a hire car for our stay in Tofo. The house has a fantastic view and is very well-located. It's off the beaten track with a beach that is shared with very few other houses and is bracketed by beautiful volcanic rock. We walked down for a swim every morning and evening. The house is very rustic, as expected. We had all the basic necessities described in the listing. A few things broke here and there (windows and toilets) but Fransisco was very quick to fix them. Tofo is a short drive and about a 10-15 minute walk away (along the beach and rocks). Tofo itself has a great vibe - we ate seafood at beach-side restaurants; went for many swims on the beach and went on a fantastic trip to snorkle with a whale shark (highly recommended).

The view is stunning and the house stays pretty cool with all the windows open with a cross breeze. The place does need some basic upgrades such as working windows and door knobs. We really enjoyed our stay, we were able to do it without a car; it's a long walk to town but we were prepared for it. Overall a great holiday.

Casa Baleia is a wonderful get-away from the city-rush. With a beautiful view and a lovely breeze it is the perfect location to sit back and relax.

A spacious house built on stilts with a huge terrace overlooking the ocean far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A great location for relaxation, but close enough to Tofo to visit restaurants and partake in activities like ocean safaris. Friendly host and caretaker. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for something bit different.

Most beautiful view ever. Very private. Rustic as expected. Excellent seafood and the most affordable price ever. The scuba diving is an absolute must. We thoroughly enjoyed our honeymoon at Casa Baleia.
