Welcome to our place! Our names are Nick and Rachel, and we are a married couple living in a wonderful neighborhood of Madison, Wisconsin. Nick teaches students with disabilities and Rachel is a PhD student. We love to travel and to share our apartment with travelers! We hope you'll feel at home in our apartment.

**********Room information**********
Our apartment is the top two floors of a three-floor house on Williamson Street. Your bedroom is on the lower of the two floors, and ours is on the upper floor, so you'll have quite a bit of privacy. The room has a hardwood-frame futon with a luxury futon mattress, and all bedding is 300-count, 100% cotton. The room has hardwood floors, a desk, and a large closet with both shelves and hangers.

We have a great kitchen, two living rooms, a dining room, and a back deck with seating and a grill that are all open to you. We have one bathroom, but sharing it is never a problem, since Nick leaves at the crack of dawn and Rachel has a flexible schedule.

The house is non-smoking, but you are welcome to smoke on the deck or porch.

We have wifi with a very solid internet connection.

**********Location**********
Our place is located in the Willy Street neighborhood. We're about 2 miles from campus and 1.5 miles from the Capitol.

The neighborhood is a nice mix of houses and independently-owned shops and restaurants. We're out of the main undergrad area, with mainly grad students and families living around here. Within a few blocks' walk you'll find the amazing organic foods coop, multiple coffee shops and bars, four local bakeries, a wide range of restaurants (Thai, pizza, Wisconsin pub fare, Costa Rican . . . the list goes on), and many local shops (check out the Guidebook at the top right of this webpage to see our recommendations). A favorite hang-out down the street was described in a recent New York Times travel review as "friendly . . . in a let’s-dress-hipsterish-and-talk-about-our-kids’- kindergarten-teachers way," and we think this sums up our neighborhood.

Lake Monona is about 4 short blocks away, with a nice swimming beach a few blocks further along the lake. The famous, large, Saturday Farmers' Market occurs up at the Capitol, 1.5 miles away, but we also have a smaller Tuesday market just a few blocks away.

Our house is just a block away from the bike paths that lead straight to campus or on some nice rides around town. We are happy to loan you one of our many bikes, but if they don't fit you, Madison now has a bike-sharing program, B-cycle, in which you sign up for a 24-hour "membership" to rent bikes from stations located all over town.

If you prefer to take the bus, there are multiple bus lines within a few blocks of the house.

We are about a 10-minute drive from the airport.

**********Parking**********
There is never a problem finding a free spot on the street within a two-block walk.

**********Food and cooking**********
All food that we serve you is made with ingredients from the farmers' market and/or the co-op, and we happily accommodate vegan, gluten-free, etc.

The rental price listed includes basic breakfast items, such as fair-trade coffee and tea, bagels or bread, butter/vegan butter, jam, peanut butter, cereals and milk/soy milk, yogurt, and fruit. If it's a weekend, we'll probably make a more extensive breakfast that we'd love for you to join (examples: huevos rancheros made with Christenson Farm eggs and Farmer John's cheddar; breakfast quinoa with dates and almonds; 10-grain pancakes with bananas and walnuts; etc)

We cook delicious vegetarian dinners nearly every night. You are welcome to join us!

Please feel free to cook in our kitchen. We make space in the fridge and cabinets for you to keep food in the house, and you are also welcome to help yourself to cooking basics, like oils, vinegars, spices, and baking supplies.

*We ask that you refrain from bringing meat into the house.*

**********Pets**********
We have two pet rabbits that live on the upper floor. You won't even know they are here unless you want to come up and visit them. They are friendly, clean, and litter-box trained. We don't generally accept visitors with pets.

**********Looking for things to do in Madison?**********
We just moved to Madison a few years ago, and we love it here! We have many suggestions of fun things to do and great places to eat in the area. We understand that some guests prefer to explore on their own and others want an insider's perspective, and we are happy to accommodate whatever kind of experience you are looking for.

We often spend our weekends doing things like apple picking at a local orchard, going to one of the many farmers' markets here, cycling through the arboretum, checking out an art show, or just heading to a favorite bar with an amazing beer selection. You are more than welcome to join us for any of these activities, or we can just point you in the right direction to do them on your own.

  • Rachel and Nick were great hosts. They left bagels, cereal and coffee for us in the morning and were very helpful in suggesting some great places to eat and drink in the city. Their apartment is awesome and they live in one of the best neighborhoods in the city. You don't need a car to get around where they are so that was a big plus because my girlfriend and I don't drive.

  • Rachel and here husband were out of town the entire weekend and still opened their apartment up to me! Everything was great -- if you are going to Madison, stay with these guys!

  • I didn't get to spend a lot of time with Rachel & Nick since they had a potluck on the single night I stayed with them. The first thing that comes to mind, though, is that they're the kind of folks I'd like to invite to my potluck. Obviously very well-informed, friendly, caring people with the kinds of passions (e.g. green) that you'd expect in this city/neighborhood. The apartment was spotless, the bed was quite comfortable for a futon, and the shared bathroom wasn't a problem. I'm sure they'll continue to be great hosts in their new apt in 4/12, and I would definitely stay with them again.

  • Nick was an awesome host! Unfortunately Rachel was on the road but I kept him informed on my arrival using Glympse (pre-dates Find My Friends for the iPhone but it's service-agnostic and works across mobile platforms and e-mail). When I arrived and got settled in I needed to get some work done and Nick invited me to join him for dinner later for a winter stew and it was *awesome*. Picked up a couple of bottles of wine at Star Liquors and a French baguette from the Co-Op down the road and we had a great dinner. Slept great, easy parking, close to my meeting, which worked out well since Madison was getting some good snow that morning. All in all, a tremendous experience and I plan to make it my de facto landing pad when coming to town for business by myself. Thanks so much for making me feel so at home and I love, love, love the space.

  • I just returned from a weekend stay at Nick and Rachel’s home. The room was incredibly clean and comfortable, and it had nice touches like guest soaps and toothpaste, maps, and magazines. The apartment was immaculate as well. I had to leave for my retreat before I could enjoy their offering of savory rice breakfast soup (with tamari and cilantro), but I had enough time to gobble down Rachel’s homemade granola with organic yogurt. The coffee was also exceptional. I learned it had been purchased from a 100% fair trade roaster who delivered the beans by bike. Nick and Rachel were fantastic hosts – welcoming, warm, and engaging. They were very kind and went the extra mile to ensure that I was comfortable. For example, Rachel offered me use of her bus pass and also invited me to meet them at an evening social event. Their house is located very close to campus and there is ample parking in their neighborhood. I would recommend staying at this lovely place on Willy Street to anyone looking for a comfortable, affordable option when visiting Madison (campus or not campus-related). In this home, there’s very little of the weirdness that comes with being in a strangers’ home, as there is plenty of space in the apartment. Nick and Rachel are an excellent model of living sustainably, but comfortably. I will definitely rebook for my next visit to Madison.

  • Great hosts, friendly. Enjoyed great conversations and the cuban vegetarian dish they made. eco-friendly!

  • Rachel and Nick were wonderful hosts. They were friendly, considerate and respectful of my privacy. At the same time, there were very welcoming, including me in (delicious!) meals and making sure I knew how to navigate the city. I had a lovely stay and would definitely return if I were to be in Madison again. Thanks, guys!

  • Rachel and Nick are great! They were really fun to stay with when we were in Madison, so easy-going and friendly. I would love to stay with them again!!

  • Rachel was fantastic. She gave us lots of ideas about where to go in Madison before we even got to their place, and was super friendly when we finally met her in person in the morning (we got in late). She was flexible with when we were going to get in, and provided a good selection for breakfast. The room and the rest of the apartment were both lovely. Madison itself was wonderful, so we hope to visit again and hopefully stay with Rachel!

  • My friend and I met in Madison because it was a good place to meet in the middle and Rachel and Nick's apartment was the perfect place to stay. It's in a great location and they were great hosts. The apartment was very clean, the bed was comfortable and they were very helpful giving us ideas of where to go. I'd love to visit Madison again and would stay with Rachel and Nick again for sure.
