About this listing

Perched in the trees with verdant views of the Cascade Valley, my 2 bedroom/1 bath home offers beauty, serenity, and art. One-half mile from downtown Fairfax. Squeaky clean, with all amenities of home (because I live there except when guests do), the house inspires creativity and respite.

The space

A serene retreat that any writer or artist or meditator or honeymooning couple would love, my home is perched in the trees, yet is minutes away from town.

A hillside view of the Cascade Valley is revealed through sliding glass doors, opening one wall of the living room (upstairs) and of the master bedroom (downstairs) onto a view of the green outdoors, a valley with dozens of varieties of trees, a distant mountainside and sky. The glass doors -- both upstairs and downstairs -- open to redwood decks which have glass sides, so that the gorgeous view is not obscured. You will see deer resting and squirrels running and birds soaring close by. A creek at the bottom of the hill rages in winter and is dry in summer.

My home is a cozy two bedroom, one bathroom on two stories. Upstairs are the living room, dining room and brand new kitchen. Downstairs are two bedrooms and the bathroom. Hardwood, amber-colored floors throughout reflect the ample natural light. All new electricity provides lights in the master bedroom operable from the door or from the brand new all natural bed -- an organic, all-latex mattress on a massive, designer log bed. This is the most comfortable bed you'll ever sleep in! You can wake up to the green view if you want or close the thick drapes to keep it dark enough to sleep in. The second bedroom (the red room) can sleep one person (adult or child). It's a cozy room without a view -- decorated to encourage whimsy and imagination -- remarkably conducive either to creative work or conversation.

You can expect to have the whole sparkling-clean house to yourself, with all the amenities of home provided. I will leave your breakfast, as well as ample linens and towels, hair dryer and shampoo, cappuccino maker and coffee or tea. You will have access to the (also brand new) washing machine and dryer. I have wi-fi for your computer and all the premium channels on cable TV. (HBO, IFC, Turner Classic, Sundance, Comedy). Bring your IPod because there's a dock with speakers in the bedroom.

I rent my home when I go on vacation or out of town. Inquire if you are wondering if your dates are available, as I can sometimes (not always) arrange to be away.

The house is a half mile from downtown Fairfax -- walking distance-- or a two minute drive. The car deck (also recently upgraded) holds parking for two cars. In downtown Fairfax, you'll find three live music venues, a movie theater, and loads of good restaurants. Try the new Hummingbird Cafe for organic New Orleans style food or Avatar's Punjabi Burritos for a cuisine that combines Indian, Mexican and Jamaican (and it's not just burritos). The FairFix Cafe is a funky mediterranean style cafe where locals hang out, and the Fatoush salad is the best in the Bay area. There's also Thai food, Mexican, Chinese, and several options for espresso, including the drive-through Java Hut. The oldest health food store in Marin (The Good Earth) is now also the biggest and has a restaurant.

It's a ten minute drive to three of the five lakes owned by the Marin Municipal Water District. Lake Lagunitas has a flat 1.7 mile walking or biking loop. Bon Tempe Lake is 3.7 miles around, and Alpine Lake is about 10 miles around. Minutes away is total wilderness, good for hiking, biking and fishing. Fairfax is where the mountain bike was invented!

Fairfax is known for its unusual slant on life, a quirky town where music is on the streets when it's warm, and the local Farmers' Market is a Wednesday night kid-friendly party from May to October 4 pm to 8 pm. Known as the gateway to West Marin, Fairfax is 30 minutes to Point Reyes and 40 minutes to San Francisco. It's possible to take the bus to Larkspur Ferry into the city or all the way into the city.

Security deposit of $300 required; returned if no damage.

Cleaning fee: $100 in addition.

Absolutely no smoking anywhere on the property, inside or outside.

I checked off "yes" that there are pets on premises in case you have allergies because I have a dog, who will not be left behind! Know that the house will be thoroughly, professionally cleaned.

Please be sure to give me enough information about you so that I feel comfortable with you staying in my home. Your full name and a photograph that shows your face clearly are both very helpful.

Entire house, including: washing machine and dryer, linens, towels, hair dryer, full kitchen with all staples and spices. Because I live in the house, I will leave my clothes and other possessions. I clean out a full closet and three drawers in the bathroom for your use. And you are welcome to use shampoos, soaps, first aid items, as well as a large DVD collection with unusual films.
My home has double banisters on the stairs and grab handles in the shower.

I am available via phone, text, or email, I am happy to answer questions, advise on site-seeing, or solve problems, but I will be traveling while you are in my home.

Fairfax is safe and its people are committed to preserving nature. The neighborhood is filled with trees and distant views like the country, yet it's minutes from a movie theater and three music venues. Fairfax is a great little town half hour from Point Reyes and 40 minutes from San Francisco.

A bus is available in town that will take you to San Francisco or to the Larkspur ferry terminal so you can take a boat into San Francisco. The bus called the West Marin stagecoach will also take you to point Reyes and Inverness. It's best to have a car here, however.

Sandy's house is located on a hill with wonderful decks and the scent of bay trees. There is plenty of space for two, the kitchen is well-equiped, the furniture is very comfortable and there is fabulous art-work everywhere you look. It is an easy walk into town to restaurants, farmers' market, and a great health food store. Sandy kept us well-informed about area cultural offerings. Point Reyes Seashore is a beautiful 50 minute drive away. We will definitely return to Sandy's place.

What a wonderful experience I had living in Fairfax. I came with an injured back and Sandy saved me :) She was very generous, kind and supportive. Sandy went far and beyond to make sure I had everything and provided recommendations for some great local practitioners. I was able to heal within 2 weeks in such a peaceful environment. Sandy's home is pretty much the first Airbnb place where it was fully quiet during the night and I was able to sleep. The bed was very comfortable and the curtains blocked the light completely. There's everything you'll ever need on your journey. Sandy is very conscious and has lots of healthy and organic pantry goods. As soon as I got better I went to hikes every day thanks to Sandy as she left me her pass for Mt. Tamalpais watershed reserves. It's just a 10 min drive and you're in the wilderness. I've seen lots of wildlife and nature helped me to heal. Thank you Sandy for all your help, I will always remember.

We absolutely loved our stay at this beautiful home! The home itself is lovely (I'm in love with the comfy bed and the big TV) and had every amenity that we could ask for, and the setting is like being in a tree house. The beautiful decks were extra treats and a perfect place to start the day with coffee and fresh air. Sandy provided us with an abundance of helpful information about the area, and we can't wait to come back to explore all of the things that she suggested. We feel that we've found our perfect home away from home for when we visit our daughter and grandkids in Fairfax. Thanks so much, Sandy, for your wonderful hospitality!

This is probably the best place I have ever stayed on Airbnb. I rented it for almost 3 weeks and it was not only in the most pristine, gorgeous, relaxing, peaceful area, but the home was perfect and charming in every way. It had huge windows - was light, airy, and I felt submerged in nature, which is what I was look for. Leaving this place was very sad! It truly felt like home. This charming and beautiful 2-level home is perfect for 1 person (or a couple) - the large kitchen has everything you need, the living room and 2 balconies are amazing. I worked, did yoga, and meditation on the balcony every day. The mountains and view and quiet and gorgeous birds and proximity to nature are incredible. Not to mention you are 1/2 a mile from the best health food store on the planet, in my opinion - Good Earth. The bed was probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in with high thread count sheets that felt so luxurious. And then there is Sandy - this woman went above and beyond in helping me. I wasn't feeling well and she helped me unload ALL my bags and groceries upon arriving. She went out and bought another fan as the old one was not working just before she left. She made arrangements for me in other areas that were above and beyond. She cares very much about her home (which shows) and her guests. Her communication is quick and she goes the extra mile to help you out. I am a very quick responder and so appreciated that Sandy was the same in helping me with any questions I had. I have already told Sandy I will plan my next visit back to the Bay Area around her travel schedule so I can rent out this amazing home again. It is a gem! It is only 40 minutes from the city, but has the peaceful country living atmosphere that I really needed for a few weeks. Note: 10 minutes up the road is the entrance to Mt Tam Watershed, which is a stunning set of hikes/lakes/biking trails - Bon Temp and Lake Lagunitas. I absolutely adore this place!

I'm a very active, respectful, friendly consumer of world culture. Though I'm retired from full time teaching (I taught screenwriting, film history, cinema studies). I write, organize film events, produced two documentaries, and I do loads of creative work. I'm upbeat and realistic. My home is in Marin County, north of San Francisco.
