The Azul Cielo Hostel is great for the budget traveler, and you can meet some really interesting people in the process. We loved working on the second-floor bar terrace and enjoying the hammock, although the wifi was rarely strong enough during our week-long stay to hold a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) call (which was burdensome considering we had to work during our trip). The hostel is slightly outside the center, which made it easy to explore the city by foot and try out some of the best restaurants for local cuisine. When I arrived the first day sick, the receptionist helped us find a nearby doctor, and even tried to figure out a way to get the prescription delivered since it was so late at night. The only negatives were 1) the horrible smell coming from the bathroom (maybe it was the water?) that never went away, and wasn't taken care of, even after we reported it to the reception desk and 2) the attitude of the volunteer in the kitchen, who answered my request for a clean pot to boil water for tea by suggesting that I clean one of the dirty ones in the sink (which had crusted and burned rice in them). Perhaps I'm getting old, but when I pay to stay somewhere, I expect that I won't have to be cleaning up after other guests! Outside of these two points (all of the staff were lovely, and very helpful/accommodating), the Azul Cielo Hostel is the perfect spot for the budget traveler.

The room was really clean and a nice comfortable space. Breakfast was wonderful and more than expected. Staff was friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. Wanted to rent bikes but there were few in working order. It was very easy to walk to any sites. I really enjoyed the location out of the more touristy zone.

Helpful staff and great location, the owners clearly work very hard to create a nice space. Very good vibes here, quieter area of central Oaxaca, the pictures describe the lodgings well. The communal breakfast is a great way to start the day and meet fellow travelers. If you are a hosteler, this place will be at the top of your list of favorite places to stay, as it has been for me!
