Large, Sunny, Inviting Private Bedroom in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn
Private House-Private Room, Westminster Rd., Brooklyn 11218

Details:
Private entrance to spacious private room on second floor of a free-standing house in the Victorian Flatbush neighborhood of Ditmas Park. Quiet residential street. Garden view. Comfy full-sized bed, premium cable, free wifi. Semi-private bath on first floor. This house was used as a set for the feature films “Definitely, Maybe” with Ryan Reynolds, “Solitary Man” with Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito, and the TV series “Damages” with Glenn Close. Considered one of the best-kept secrets in New York, Ditmas Park boasts suburban living in the Big Apple. Tree-lined streets, Victorian houses, front porches, not what is typically expected of the New York experience. Very accesible to public transportation, walking distance to Prospect Park, easy commute to Coney Island in one direction and Manhattan in the other. Our neighborhood provides the best of both worlds, however, because right down the block is a veritable restaurant row reflecting the diversity of the neighborhood with Japanese, Filipino, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Tibetan restaurants, among others.

Room can comfortably accomodate 2 adults, possibly one child but no infants or toddlers due to staircase.

  • My girlfriend and I decided to give Airbnb a try and stayed with Alice and Stan in their beautiful home. Alice and her family were extremely friendly and helpful. Despite our early morning arrival to NY, Alice took us in and made sure we had a room in which we could relax until the previous night's tenants checked out. The atmosphere was relaxed in that we were able to come and go as we pleased and had access to their back porch to get fresh air. Breakfast is made available to you in your room with the choice of fruit, yogurt, or 3 different kinds of cereal. Milk, water, orange juice, and tea (to be prepared with the electric tea kettle) was also provided. There are several restaurants/markets within a 5 to 10 minute walk (the restaurants also deliver). The Q line station at Beverly Rd. is within 5 minutes of the house and makes travel to Manhattan/Coney Island very simple. With the age of the house, it is natural for it to carry some noise if someone is walking around on the hard-wood floors. This is of no fault to Alice/Stan. For this reason only, I would recommend ear plugs to those who happen to be light sleepers. I slept comfortably in the bed, which accommodated 2 people. Alice and Stan have 2 cats that hang out in their house and outside of it. The animals are never allowed in your room, so no worries there. The shower that was available downstairs was wonderful since I enjoy strong water pressure. The TV in the room has a wide variety of cable channels, including HBO/Showtime, and there is a small selection of DVDs available to watch as you wish. There is also a bookshelf with plenty of reading material. The wifi connection is very fast! We feel like we lucked out by having the privilege to stay with Alice and her family and want to thank them for being gracious hosts.

  • Great room! It was an amazingly comfortable stay in a fancy room with an extremely comfortable bed. Lots of extra bonus' like snacks, books, breakfast, coffee and tea, etc... right in the room. Great host! Alice went out of her way to make sure the stay was a pleasant one, offering loads of information and answering any questions. Great house! Great neighborhood! Thank you. I would love to stay again, soon!

  • First time ever in New York and USA plus first time using AirBNB one is always a bit nervous... but I've been so lucky to find this place. Alice and Stan and their daughters are an amazingly lovely family with a beautiful house. Treat was excellent and relationship as well. Room is big, spacious and beautiful and so cozy, I felt at home from the first day when I arrived. It's also in a lovely neighbourhood, minutes walk to train station and to few good restaurants and bars. Had great breakfast service and everything was perfectly clean. If I come back to New York I'll definetily be booking this again, highly highly recommend this!

  • Alice, Stan and their family are great people and I very much enjoyed my stay with them. The house is a wonderful specimen of Victorian architecture, the street is picture-perfect, and the room is ... maybe "opulent" would be verbally gilding the lily, but it's hard to overstate how comfortable it is. Plus their WiFi is wickedly fast, something I appreciated as a Web professional. My only regret is I couldn't steal that wonderful bed. Thanks folks! It was a wonderful visit!

  • Alice and Stan are wonderful hosts, they welcomed us into their home and were always friendly and helpful. We were a couple traveling with an 11 year old child - I think that this accommodation would be much more suited to just one or two guests - entirely our decision to push it to three, but it was a bit cramped with all of us there. The hosts did provide a perfectly adequate mattress on the floor for our daughter and she did sleep well there :) I think this room would be perfect for people who have a "sleep late, rise late" rhythm, as the host family does this too and if you're wanting an early night then it could be that the evening noise of general family life (nothing outrageous at all) would keep you awake. The house is within easy walking distance of the Metro, located in a quiet Brooklyn street - great to get away from the central city craziness at the end of the day!

  • Alice and Stan were fabulous hosts! Their home is gorgeous, comfortable and private. The proximity to a subway was wonderfully convenient, the spacious room and beautiful back yard were unlike anything I've ever experienced in New York. All in all, I can absolutely recommend staying here. It was a joy and I hope I can come back very soon!

  • Very nice people kind and friendly Room is spacious clean and fresh The home has a lovely comfortable feel The use of the subway is easy with the Q train within walking distance I recommend this room to anyone

  • New Zealanders pride ourselves on our hospitality, and I’m now convinced New Yorkers do, too. At least that’s been very much our experience during our stay with Alice and Stan in their beautiful house in Brooklyn. We’d decided we wanted to spend our last five days in Brooklyn just to get a different feel for New York City. This was our first major trip to New York and after spending seven days in a tiny room in the West Village (which was also fantastic, but for different reasons!), being welcomed into this spacious and warm Ditmas Park home felt almost like a guilty pleasure! The room and the house are accurately described by the photographs with the listing, but what you can’t see in those photographs is the feeling of love and care the house radiates. We felt like part of the family while we were here. And that’s not to say that Stan and Alice interfered with our daily movements in any way – it’s just the feeling of the house. A wonderful and unexpected bonus in what was already a convenient and peaceful location. Alice checked in with me a couple of days before to see what we would like for our breakfasts and delivered it fresh each morning exactly as requested. The room has a mini fridge, kettle and a water-cooler, and Alice provided a fruit bowl on the table in the room too, which was especially nice for us as we eat a lot of raw food. Both Stan (from New Zealand) and Alice (from NY) have huge knowledge of this city and their own neighbourhood, and we availed ourselves of it many times during our stay. They were extremely considerate of our plans, our sleep and our food requirements, and spent time with us on more than one occasion discussing possiblities for how we could both get to spend more time in future in this amazing city (we both loved it and I’m thinking I may study here). Both Stan and Alice work in the arts and this was a huge plus for us as we are both creatives ourselves. A special treat was watching Stan perform at an event we ourselves were also appearing at in Brooklyn, and hearing a little of a play reading that Alice was hosting one evening (eavesdropping, I should add – it was in no way intrusive or disruptive to our evening). Other things we very much enjoyed about this stay included the very convenient subway locations (it’s the only place in the city with a subway stop at either end of the road – maximum walk 5-10 minutes), the range of eateries along the main road 5 minutes walk away, friendly household cats (they’ll only come into the room if invited) and the quiet, tree-lined streets of the neighbourhood. The little touches meant a lot too – the bathroom for example (which is for guest use only) was not only clean and well-stocked, but heated in the mornings; there was a beautiful flower arrangement of red roses (among other blooms) in our room when we arrived; there’s a huge walk-in wardrobe for guest use with plenty of coat-hangers; lovely glass teacups were a special treat (we’re a bit tea-obsessed in New Zealand!). Overall, as is probably clear, we had a wonderful time staying with Stan and Alice, and we hope to visit again in the near future. I would recommend this stay to anyone.

More about the host
  • About: About us: Stan is a musician, music teacher, and producer. He has played with many bands on both coasts of the US, most notably the wildly popular rockabilly band, Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks. He came to the States from his native New Zealand with the acclaimed band “The Drongos.” He is now band leader of a new endeavor, “Stanley John Mitchell and His Band of Buddies.” We would like to offer any musicians coming to stay with us in Brooklyn the opportunity to record in his studio! Stanley would be happy to produce and provide rythmn section work on your original material. Rates will be discussed when interest is expressed. Alice is a working actor, having appeared in many films, tv shows and commercials. If you are coming to New York to audition for universities or conservatories, she would be delighted to answer any questions you might have about the industry. We love good food and wine, movies, theatre and music, (obviously!). We have two spectacular daughters, many good friends and neighbors and a love of our community. Our goal is to do more traveling, with Paris and Barcelona topping our European wish list, and to be able to visit Stan's homeland Down Under much more frequently than we do. Alice is a native New Yorker who loves this town madly and is always happy to share her knowledge of it.
