I have a small studio apartment in Central Mumbai. It has one bedroom where I sleep and a hall where there is a large sofa cum bed suitable for 2 people - this is what's on offer along with an exclusive bathroom for guests and arrangements for breakfast - either Indian or western.
I will not pretend that this is the most comfortable accommodation you can get but this arrangement is ideal for short-stay budget travellers as Mumbai has no hostels and budget hotels are not only low quality but also often not very cheap. Come here if you're looking for an informal experience and an easygoing host!
My place is clean, cheerful, centrally located and well connected to the older parts of the city. There is cable TV in the hall in front of the couch, an IMAX theatre nearby and pay-per-use swimming pool downstairs. You can also get a local phone SIM card at a 5 min distance. There are also a couple of parks (quite rare in Mumbai) close by. I am out most of the day and sometimes on weekends as well.
There is a bus stop right downstairs and it is a 10-15 min taxi ride to four different local train stations, with one on each of the three different railway lines. Of course, a lot depends on traffic in Mumbai!
