We were so excited the minute we walked up to this place! Heidy, the woman in charge at Sleeping Indian, is an artist and is extremely talented. She painted a cute Beatles mural around the stairs in the entry way and many of her other beautiful paintings hang in the hostel. The main room is so cozy, complete with a hammock and little collection of books. We felt immediately at home. Everyone was so welcoming and laid-back. Full access to the kitchen area and their interaction is what you want it to be. My only complaints would be that there is no AC, as mentioned in other reviews, so it can get really hot in the room some days (we visited in May). There's a big fan, which helps, but I was definitely a bit uncomfortable when trying to sleep sometimes. Also, the shower is lukewarm at best. However, the location could not be better and the room was very clean when we arrived. Well worth the price! Gracias Heidy we had a great stay xxx

Response from Peter:
thanks so much for the kind words yes, fortuna is a hot place, the only way we can keep the price low is to provide fans rather than AC which is crazy expensive here and would require our rates to be higher

Beautiful, mellow place in a great location with kind and gracious hosts that can help out with everything. Very much appreciated their advice and help booking our adventures around the Arenal volcano. Art covers every wall, much of which is personal and you feel very welcome here. The whole place is also very low carbon footprint, in keeping with the Costa Rican way of life.

Its a super cool place that was great for me travelling alone because it's set up in a way for you to meet other travellers. If your expectations are that you will be living like the Costa Ricans do, you'll have a great time! Heidy was so knowledgeable and helpful and offered information about everything I needed! They also responded very quickly to my messages before I arrived in Costa Rica. If I'm ever back in la Fortuna I would definitely stay here again!

Pros: -close to everything in town, walking. -helpful, friendly staff -nice common area -decent price -breakfast at lava lounge (rusty) -cute dogs -cool decor Cons: -no aircon (hot) -squeaky, hard bed (maybe just our room?) -only got hot water from shower sometimes -noise off of streets very loud early in the morning because of openness of house

Response from Peter:
hi savannah no one has complained about it being hot at night in la fortuna in a very long time - this is the tropics and people usually expect it to be warm. our beds are orthopedic and everyones taste in firmness is different. we offered ear plugs for those who are noise sensitive.

Peter Ferguson the owner of the The Sleeping Indian Guesthouse and welcomes international travelers from all over the world.. Peter is a world traveler who has explored many varied countries and environments and has chosen La Fortuna as his favorite place on the planet and is enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge of this special area of a special country. The Sleeping Indian Guesthouse is centrally located in downtown La Fortuna named after a little chain of mountains next to Volcano Arenal in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. The wind and rain of millions of years of evolution has formed a chain of mountains that looks just like a sleeping indian. The more you look- the more you are amazed, since it seems that these giant mountains actually are a big Indian lying down. We think that no matter what kind of traveler you are, everybody likes to feel at home. Making you feel at home is Peter's goal. He loves people and he loves hosting.
