About this listing
Private first floor room and bathroom with separate entrance in a lovely renovated floating home on Portage Bay, Seattle. 10 minute walk to the UW campus and close to many bus routes. Experience life on the water for a while - it is special.
Lots of people are curious about Seattle "houseboats" - I was one of them. Now that I live in one, it makes me very happy to be able to share the space with others who would like to experience this unique lifestyle for a few days. The house is super comfortable and supremely well-located in an historically significant neighborhood.
You will need to be able to navigate a set of stairs and a short (somewhat fragile) dock. The dock is fixed but the house floats and the water level changes, so you may also have to negotiate differences in the levels of the walkways. Once you enter the neighborhood, it will be a different world - close to nature and right on the water. You will have access to everything on the ground floor, inside and out (approx. 800 sf). We will share the kitchen and washer/dryer.The kitchen is high-end and there will be space for your stuff if you want to cook. The upstairs is off-limits.
Interaction with guests
I am fairly private and so will be on hand to greet you and/or pass you by in the kitchen - but otherwise, I'm happy just to give you directions and leave you alone to explore! I inhabit the second floor mostly, so will be out of the way but available if needed. The price reflects both quality and desired compatibility. The house is an oasis for me and hopefully for others as well.
You will be minutes away from a French bakery and one of the best sushi restaurants in Seattle, yet tucked away in a quiet, rural neighborhood. A 20 min. walk/5 min. drive to Trader Joe's, 10-15 minute drive to Whole Foods, 1 minute to the Burke-Gilman bike trail, and just across the bridge from the UW. Excellent driving access to I-5 and SR-520 (to the Eastside).
This is city living at its best - the walk score is 78 (very walkable); transit score is 73; and bike score is 85. The UW is a public transit hub because it employs so many people. The location is extremely accessible to other neighborhoods and parts of the city via car or Seattle metro transit. Plentiful free street parking five minutes away. There is no parking on the street or driveway, except for temporary load/unload. Please do not park in just any spot - the parking is very tight on the street itself and I must stay on good terms with neighbors.
Other things to note
Small refrigerator in room. Kayak and bicycle rentals located nearby.
I am a quiet person who works a lot from home. I expect guests to respect my privacy and space, in addition to that of my neighbors. Although I'm happy to share this space with my Airbnb guests, this is definitely not a "vacation rental by owner" or listing for other guests without my prior permission. Airbnb guests have full access to the outside deck around the house downstairs but cannot access the water from my deck (there are plenty of public launches and boat rentals around Lake Union for that purpose). The shared dock is very private and somewhat fragile - thus please take a lot of care in walking over the dock, and please do not disturb my dock neighbors with any noise. I have separate living quarters upstairs and we would be sharing the parts of the downstairs. Your room and bath would be off-limits to me during your stay. If you are staying over 2 weeks, you should plan to provide own detergent, toiletries, and other essentials. Guests are also expected to clean their dishes and keep common areas tidy. As stated above, extra visitors are only allowed with prior permission - if you have any questions, please ask prior to booking so we can be clear about this rule. And even though I like cats and dogs, please no pets! Thank you for your interest in my home.
