welcome to the attic!

billy and i live in an old cardboard box factory, in north oakland. with two dogs, two cats, two gerbils, and 1 turtle.

mostly we live downstairs, with the dogs, and the cats.

(downstairs: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/215929)

but we also rent this attic space, which functions as a secret getaway / home office / workshop / art studio / guest space. the attic is also the home of the gerbils and the turtle.

the attic is a great space, with lots of light and air. there are three large skylights, and 5 half-height windows that face the oakland hills.

it's a private space with it's own private entrance. we do have books, clothes, tools, etc up there, and regularly pop up to grab things and/or feed the critters. But we won't be living up there with you. you'll have the space to yourself.

KiTCHEN: cool retro sink (which we plumbed and put in ourself), a mini fridge, a kettle, a hot two burner hot plate, and a bad-ass panini maker. toaster oven coming soon. as our guest, you also have full kitchen and garden privileges downstairs.

(details here: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/215929)

OFFiCE/WORKSPACE: big desk, with flatscreen widescreen monitor that you are welcome use for working and/or watching movies. WiFi, and wireless speakers. big worktable -- functions as a workbench or standing desk. small worktable, functions as a mini desk.

LAUNDRY: we have our own front-loading washing machine in our downstairs space that you are welcome to use. we usually air-dry our clothes on a clothesline or drying rack, but there are also shared coin-op dryers in the building that you can use.

BATHROOM: (important!)

You have two bathroom options:

1) our building has a big, clean, shared half bath (no shower) a short walk away (~60 feet). this bath is used by you and a couple folks who rent art studios in the building.

2) downstairs, we have a big, clean, private full bath, with a tub and a cool fish named olive. that bath room is a bit more of a trek. probably 300 feet, including a treacherous 40 feet OUTDOORS, thru an enclosed parking area / garden / courtyard / communal hangout space.

option (2) is great in the morning or at the end of the day, when you want to take a hot shower or a relaxing bath. option (1) is great in the middle of the night, when you really need to pee, and don't feel like walking that far.

LOCATiON: we are exactly on the border of berkeley, oakland and emeryville. 5 minute straight shot to I-80 (sf). 15 minute walk to bart (sf and beyond). 5 minute walk (3 blocks) to a local super-tasty bakery/coffee shop.

ALSO INCLUDED: intense love from abigail the turtle and yogurt drops you can feed to the gerbils.

  • WOW! Bren and Bill are AMAAZZZZING! Staying in this bright and breezy loft studio was an incredible gift. I felt so at home in the area and the studio was so well tended to. It would be hard to find more gracious and hospitable hosts than Bren and Bill; they took incredible care of me and really made me feel that this was my home away from home. Bren is an incredible cook and made some of the most delicious soup while I was there! Bill made coffee for me one morning and even picked me up from the airport when I first arrived!! Both Bren and Bill are incredibly creative, intelligent, vibrant human beings and their energy was infectious. I LOVED how well they cared for their animals and their spaces. Truly, the 'secret attic hideout', coupled with the incredible friendship offered by the hosts, was a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

  • I stayed in the attic for a month and felt at home from the first moment: It is beautifully decorated with a great view, it does indeed feel secret, and I couldn't have wished for more helpful, generous and charming hosts than Bill & BReN. On my bike, I found quite a few lovely places, shops and cafes in the neighbourhood. When home, it was generally very quiet in the attic, but a lot of people live in the factory and it feels lively - there were ccasional music and band rehearsals which was not too often and to me only a pleasant part of my stay. All shared areas were cool and clean and in total I was more than satisfied and very fond of everybody in the house!

  • My stay here was wonderful. Bren and Billy are the best hosts anyone could ask for. They are fantastic hosts who go above and beyond. When I arrived they offered me a yummy dinner since there were no restaurants open late in the area, invited me to dinner a different night, and on another occasion offered me some yummy pasta sauce they had just made! Delicious! If any issues came up, they resolved them very quickly. The neighborhood is very safe and it's just a 15min walk to get to the Bart Station that takes you around the bay area. I felt very safe walking late in the night and you'll find many people get off the Bart at all the time so your usually not walking totally alone at anytime. There are several restaurants within a 10min walk. It's more like a getaway to the quite part of town, which means things shut down shortly after dark. You'll find your typical places open but the stores are mostly closed by 8pm i think. It is in a warehouse, which means GREAT unique spaces! This space is beautiful! Just be aware that you can hear downstairs from upstairs and vise versa though this was never really an issue for me because there really aren't that many people coming and going in the hallways. Occasionally there is band rehearsal/jams that occur usually on a Friday or Saturday night but I was there a month and it only happen twice. It's mostly private, they do come up to feed the pets, do general maintenance, or grab a few things but they always respected my requests for blocks in time where I could not what so ever be bothered. So having a mostly private space was totally welcomed. I get cold easy, so at night it was a bit chilly for me but once I was under the blankets I was toasty warm! Lots of sunlight! Love it! Running down to shower wasn't an issue at all. The bathroom is downstairs not far from the room. A bit of an issue personally, but I also have the bladder the size of a pea. Or at least that's the joke. I worked around it. This is a wonderful space to stay. I'd stay again, but I want to have more accessibility to SF so I'm continuing my travels back over in SF. It was a great experience to see what the east bay had to offer!
