Hi, and welcome to our home!
We live in a 300-year-old stone farmhouse nestled in the rolling east Cork countryside. We are a 15 minute drive from Midleton and about 30 minutes from Cork city. The house is a nurturing retreat, with warm wood floors and thick rock walls. The countryside around us is idyllic.... I feel like I'm holiday every day! (seriously, just WAIT till you take your first stroll down the lane) We moved here in the summer of 2011 and are really enjoying ourselves!
The house sits on the leeward slope of a ridge, with panoramic views of the wide valley. Our quiet lane is lined with rich hedgerow (where I wild harvest medicinal and edible plants) and there are miles of options for relaxing country strolls. Our gardens, which are a work in progress, are lined with original rock walls. The back garden is home to a neolithic standing stone and original farm outbuildings. The front garden is tree lined and home to a hammock in summer.
Our guest room is available for you most times of the year (unless we have friends or family visiting). It is a cosy size; with sloped ceiling, double bed and deep floor-level windows that welcome the rising sun. We share the bathroom, which has a tub with an electric shower. The window in the bathroom faces west and is a wonderful place to soak in the evening as the sun sets! The sitting room has a toasty wood burning stove, though we often burn turf because I love the smell! (the house also has central heating) TV is a rare thing for us but we have a nice collection of DVD's available and, while the majority of my library is still in storage, there are books for you to enjoy, with some choice nuggets on Irish myth, history, archaeology, and folklore.
I am thrilled to share our home with you! I discovered AirBnB from a friend back in Austin and when we moved into this farmhouse I was eager to list our spare room. This is exactly the sort of location and experience I enjoy when I am travelling. It's a beautiful setting and out of the way enough not to feel "touristy".
*Please do note that the house would not easily accommodate mobility challenges as there are stairs to the bedroom, and you must climb into the tub in order to shower.*
Location:
As I said, the house is an easy 15 minute drive from Midleton, where you will find Ireland's first (and still one of the best) farmer's market every Saturday (Darina Allen's Ballymaloe Cookery School has a stall here and this market is where we do our weekly shop). Also in Midleton are the Jameson distillery, some lively pubs, great restaurants, plenty of shops, and the train in to Cork city, which is great for shopping and sight-seeing! (the last train out of Cork city is 22:15)
Other nearby attractions are the Fota Wildlife Park and Barryscourt Castle. (see my Guidebook for additional ideas)
The house is a great base for exploring Cork, Waterford, and Tipperary (though west Cork is worth its own base due to the twisty nature of the roads). A lovely beach, with sea caves and peaceful sandy walks, is a 20 minute drive away.
If you are backpacking, the house is a lovely respite! The area is quiet, with low light pollution, and our lane is a low traffic road. Perfect for a few days recuperation before the adventure begins again!
Our local (the local pub) is a handy 2km walk down our lane-way. On the road there most Sundays you will find one of Ireland's heritage sports still being played: Road Bowling! In fact, this area hosts one of the All Ireland Championships every year!
