Mission Garden Apartment

We just completed a four night stay at the Mission Garden Apartment. The apartment was well equipped and very comfortable. We appreciated the unique touches, the design elements, the art on the shelves, the books, the well equipped kitchen, and the easy recycling processes. We both concluded that the bed was the most comfortable one we have slept in away from home. We felt privileged to be able to share such a personal and interesting space.

We really enjoyed our stay at Mission Garden Apartment. Cosy and clean. Close to transport and David was a wonderful host with great tips.

i was only here for a few days but it was like walking into oz!!!! quite amazing how you can go retreat to a whole different world within a few steps hosts were very very accommodating as i had a few mishaps they were great about it very quiet and safe and the new upcoming apt they're building in the back looks like its going to be a winner!!! thank you so much for having me

We thoroughly enjoyed the apartment, the area, and our stay in San Fran. It was so lovely to have a quiet and calm place to return to each day, and the facilities were great. I have only good things to say about David and his partner, who kindly lent me their computer charger when they found out I had left mine at home. They give great advise and leave a lot of local info out for reference. I will stay there again. Thanks.

Great apartment and great host

I was looking for a space that had more amenities and personality than a boring hotel chain. This place met all my expectations! Check in and check out were a breeze. The kitchen was stocked with more than just coffee and seltzer. The laundry facilities were great! I thought it was cool that David tries to make the space homey by filling the bookshelves, putting magazines on the night stands, and generally making sure everything you could possibly need is available. I have to agree with what other posters have said about the neighborhood. It's a little sketchy and probably not a good idea to walk around at night. In the daytime however, it's fine. The street that this apartment is on is pretty nice, and is very residential. It's kept up well compared to some of the nearby streets. I also felt very safe in the apartment because of the locked gate.

Great location, comfy apartment, and a bike: couldn't have asked for more in a host. I will be crossing my fingers on this studio's availability next time I'm in SF.

My husband and I recently spend three nights at David's lovely garden apartment. It's modern, comfortable, efficient and exactly as described in the photographs. The location was perfect, David's neighborhood map was extremely helpful and we put the orange bikes to good use. All in all, the best San Francisco visit we've had.

Staying at David's apartment was a great experience overall. We arrived early and David allowed us to come by the apartment to drop off our luggage, which was really appreciated. The apartment itself was thoughtfully laid out and had many useful amenities like a washer/dryer, small refrigerator, and hot plates to cook basic meals. Aesthetically the apartment is cool and modern, but comfortable. The location provides easy access to downtown and is an easy trip from the airport. The Mission area has lots of cool restaurants, stores, and bars within walking distance. David put together a great binder of local spots to check out which was a great reference. A couple of things to note on the apartment: 1) There is no A/C, nor is there a fan...I thought since it would be in the low 60s at night we would be okay, but it was stuffy and we were sweaty even with both windows open. 2) The window in the bathroom appears to be a mirror - but it isn't, and anyone who is walking in the communal hallway can easily see in. I hung a towel over the window when I was showering, which solved the problem easily enough. Just something to be aware of... The apartment is convenient to the 16th & Mission Street BART station as well as Muni stops. After reading some terrible things about the 16th Street BART station online I was apprehensive about staying in the area and almost canceled the reservation. One of the other reviewers compared it to Brooklyn, and since I have stayed many times in the “ghetto” of the Bronx, I figured I would be able to handle it without a problem. Although scummy, I wasn't shocked initially - homeless people, thug types, working class folks, etc. People were smoking pot in the street, but I didn't see anyone shooting up like some of the reviews I found talked about. The morning we were leaving turned out to be the worst – there was piss all over the streets, a group of guys tried to approach me, a homeless man in a wheelchair was shirtless and wandering around aimlessly, and a homeless woman in a wheelchair was defecating in the corner and struggling to try to get back in her wheelchair. Frankly, if this had been what we saw when we arrived we would have hightailed it out of there. Ultimately, my husband and I both really enjoyed staying at the apartment. While the area as a whole was fine, the BART station was decidedly gross. If we were to stay again we would just avoid the 16th Street BART station and spring for a taxi.

All of the great reviews held true for us. David was a great host, and this studio is spacious, quiet and comfortable (even for a small family like ours). The coffee was also excellent. On the neighborhood: I imagine that the Mission District and its residents will intimidate some people, but it is just part of experiencing SF.

David is the real deal: an impassioned San Franciscan, an artist and activist, a kind host, and an exemplary place-maker. This apartment is a gem: clever, creative, and beautifully curated. You will have a very special time staying here in your own little house in his home.
