Experience the best Portland has to offer from a private studio in a lush, backyard garden. Our beautiful, eco-home on a quiet street is conveniently located in Southeast Portland's best and most walkable neighborhood.

The space

Chosen as one of Portland's 10 best Airbnb rentals by Portland Monthly Magazine, it's hard to find a better deal. Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.

The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. Beautiful photography, by a local artist, graces the walls.

Guest access

There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your personal use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Towels and bathrobes are provided.

Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.

Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural markets have just what you need for your outing.

Interaction with guests

We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!

Other things to note

We have recently upgraded the bed in the studio from a full to a queen! The bed frame and nightstands are also new. The photos do not yet reflect this change.

The cottage was private, beautiful and nicely decorated. We felt completely at home when we arrived. Very nice couple that allowed you your privacy. The back yard garden was absolutely gorgeous, love the various plants and seclusion. They made us raspberry bars that was delicious. There are many places within walking distance to check out, and they have a very helpful guide of places for you to visit. We felt quite safe walking around at night which is a big plus. If you are looking for a relaxing and memorable get-away in a convenient location, I would very much recommend the Urban Garden Studio.

I absolutely loved this Airbnb! It was so cute and I could tell a lot of thought went into it. They paid attention to little details like leaving umbrellas in the studio and putting fresh flowers in the dining room. Everything was so beautifully put together that their home and garden cottage could be in an interiors magazine. Joelle was super accommodating and a great communicator. Raspberry bars were delicious too! Great location for walking to cool shops and restaurants in either decoration also.

Joelle and James were lovely and very accommodating- we were even able to arrange an early check-in, which was extremely helpful! Their home is beautiful and the garden suite was very clean and comfortable. They provided coffee, various teas, and fresh baked goods in the morning. Their home is within walking distance to plenty of great shops, bakeries, restaurants and food trucks-- We spent hours just wandering the neighbourhood! One minor issue may be that on rainy days, the Garden suite begins to feel a little damp. For us (fellow west coasters) this wasn't really a big deal but I could see someone visiting from a dryer climate potentially being bothered by it. All in all, a wonderful experience and we would absolutely stay again!

Response from Joelle And James:
Thank you for the nice review and also the feedback about the dampness. We hadn't heard that before. The heater can make the studio toasty warm, but sounds like running the dehumidifier in between guests might be helpful. We're glad you had a good stay and we'd love to have you back!

A perfect little getaway tucked in the comfy SE Portland neighborhoods. We felt so welcomed and comfortable in the Urban Garden Studio and in Joelle and James' house. The studio was very well kept and a perfect size for two friends or a couple looking for a quaint stay in Portland. The home felt both hidden and secluded but also just minutes walking distance from some of the most popular food stops in Portland. It was definitely a unique and beautiful way to experience the city - almost like our home base was in a little fairy garden. Joelle and James definitely know how to make you feel at home; their three kitties, comfortable conversation/recommendations and delicious vegan desserts made almost every trip to the main house a treat. My boyfriend and I had an incredible experience here we will never forget and would love to stay here again some day.

Joelle and James were great hosts. Very understanding and communicative . The house is beautiful and brings a peaceful, serene atmosphere to all those who reside there. Definitely check this place out if you can! And the gluten free raspberry squares were outstanding!!!

We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is a kindergarten teacher. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
