About this listing

Stunning landscape, buffalo roaming, make yourself at home on a friendly ranch! New appliances in kitchen, stove/oven dishwasher, fridge. Fireplace, campfire, roam ranch, river frontage, wildlife, 360 mtn & glacier views. Beautiful wood fired Hot Tub and Super Host status!

The space

When you stay on the ranch you are also helping me save a breeding herd of buffalo. Please feel at home. Thousands of people from all over the world support our educational buffalo tours and they are number #1 of 64 'Things To Do' in Golden. From mid May to mid October, a free buffalo tour is included in your stay when you join in on any tour in progress. In winter, tours are by prior arrangement, feel free to ask about how those work. Guests are free to wander the ranch and view and photograph the buffalo and other wildlife freely. p.s. It is very quiet here, tour guests park at the barn and walk down the driveway to my cabin deck.

Guest access

Guests have access to wander the ranch, view the buffalo, pristine river frontage on the glacier fed Blaeberry River. You can have a campfire at the river at most times. You can enjoy a beautiful wood fired Hot Tub surrounded by snow and mountains. Guests are all invited to feel at home, wander the ranch and view the buffalo. Snowshoe, ski or walk. The ranch is set in a big meadow with 360 degree breathtaking views of the mountains.
note* please see house rules for liability waiver that applies to all guests

Interaction with guests

I am very happy to share about the buffalo with guests, although sometimes ranch responsibilities don't give me a lot of time. We hope to be offering private Dog Sled rides by arrangement on and from the ranch this coming winter.

Other things to note

The ranch house will be open and ready for you upon arrival. We will give you the lay of the land, and point out the trail to the river etc. There are horse rides a few minutes up the valley and a long list of fun and wonderful things you can do in the surrounding area. We are in the heart of the parks and the Blaeberry Valley is like the park with hardly any people.

Please leave the ranch house as clean as when you arrived as possible. Have fun! The wifi is free and has no pw, but please watch movies on low res and please do not upload big files. The security deposit is for extra cleaning or damage or stains on the carpet and things like that that cost money to clean or replace. No shoes in house, please be very careful of candles, only use them with an enclosed container. No pets. Fire wood is supplied for the fireplace in the living room and for the fire pit outside, and for the wood fired hot tub. Please don't waste it though. Fires should not be any bigger than needed. Kindling is supplied. Please only use as much kindling as it takes to light the fire, a small handful and some paper. There are night lights. Please turn other lights off if you're not using them. If you find the main gate closed or a rope across the driveway, please open it, drive through, and close it behind you.
Hot Tub Rules:
You use the hot tub at your own risk and it is your responsibility to use it safely and without damaging it. Always check the temperature carefully before you get in it. it can be hotter at the top than the bottom. A few stirs fixes that. It is Extremely Important that the water level never drops below the top of the fire box, for instance if six big people crammed into the tub and then all got out, the water level might drop below the fire box, then it will melt. Normally you shouldn't have to ad water, and I try and help monitor the hot tub when it's not in use and while not disturbing your privacy, but if you should need to ad water there is a hose available for that in the basement. Another things is, if you ad wood to the fire box, never pile it in there higher than the tubes that run across the inside top of the fire box. basically the wood should not be higher than about a foot or so from the bottom. I'll show you how the hot tub works when you arrive.

This is a very unique and beautiful place. The buffalo were in the field right next to the house when we drove up the driveway. What a sight!! We were two families each with two college-age kids - eight in all - visiting for 3 nights in June 2017. The house has a 1970's-style sunken living room, overlooked by a complete kitchen that we used extensively to cook our meals. The dining (picnic) table is nice and fit all 8 of us. This isn't a chi chi lodge -- the beds are comfortable enough especially after a hot tub, though not luxurious. With 8 adults, it did take a bit of managing with just one bathroom, but by the last day we had things moving efficiently. :) The shower worked well. We were a bit worried about how to manage a wood-fired hot tub, but Leo helped us with it each night. In late June the sun doesn't set until 11pm local time, so there is plenty of time to take a hot tub before the stars finally arrive. With four twenty-somethings, and two of the parents all wanting to post a picture of Chester Jr (the lord of the field) as well as the baby buffalo, the wifi was just barely enough. As others noted, going into town to a cafe for trip planning is a less frustrating, though time-consuming, option. The second day, we were lucky enough to just relax on the porch and people watch at Buffalopalooza, where Leo invites musician friends to play in the meadow, and buffalo burgers are available hot off the grill (only$10, and completely worth it). Evidently it happens just once a year (and not every year at that), you'd have to contact Leo to find future dates. That night we ate dinner out on the lawn picnic table (with a couple of extra chairs). The warmth of the day receded to a more manageable temperature; the skies were deep blue overhead, the snow-capped mountains all around. Truly an unforgettable dinner at an unforgettable place.

I booked Leo's guesthouse last moment for my partner and I as my arranged accommodation fell through the same day. Leo's place is a truly unique destination nested in the pristine hills of the Blaeberry, a less-visited part of the Canadian Rockies. The neighbourhood that the ranch sits in is sleepy and scenic, yet not too far from the bustling, vibrant town Golden - but you feel completely cut-off from the rest of the world when you're on Leo's land. It's set-up like a small community; with quirky cabins filled with other travellers scattered about the land, Leo and his staff were always close by and happy to help. The house itself is kind of retro, it has a 70's mountain lodge vibe going on. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and extremely clean. Sitting in the hot tub at dusk 40 feet away from a buffalo herd is something I'll never forget. In the morning we were included in Leo's buffalo tour, we were introduced to his heard and told about the animals, a real bonus to have as a part of an Airbnb stay! Whilst there was around 15 people attending the tour, it was by no means a tourist pocket and there was no commercialised feeling to the place. Leo's tour was personal and touching - it struck me as being the man's livelihood and passion, not just his income. Leo let us stay & enjoy the ranch for a few hours after check out, which was very relaxing. A stroll to the river front on his property made us really appreciate the untouched, perfect wilderness that is the Blaeberry, and whilst we didn't spot any bears that we told lurk in the area, there was a few white tail dear on the property. One thing I would like to add, is that this property does not offer the upscale, highly commercial aspect of Banff and other close-by resort towns. It is an authentic, rural Canadian home and operates as such. It was perfect for us! Next time we are around Golden we will be popping by to say hello. Thank you Leo for having us at such short notice and leaving such a memorable impression on us! It was a pleasure and an honour to stay at your home.

Leo seemed like a very kind person. He was very helpful with the hot tub, which was a great feature. The house is bright and spacious in a beautiful location. However, we had some major issues with our stay. 1. The biggest issue is that this was listed as a private house but it is not. There are people staying in the basement. The only thing separating them from us was a door, which they can lock and unlock from their side. We were never told this before our stay nor were we even introduced to the people in the basement. They could have been friends, workers, etc but they were not guests. However, we heard them at 11 pm every night. We smelled the marijuana they were smoking from 6 -11 pm every night. We could smell this even in our bedrooms. We heard them practicing piano in the afternoon. This was not ok. It was extremely uncomfortable. Especially as we had our two kids along. 2. We were never provided a key to the house and the back sliding door doesn't even lock. This would be fine if we were in a private location but there are other guests on the property, people living in the basement, friends visiting the host, and people coming and going throughout the day for buffalo tours. There was zero security for our personal belongings throughout the evening and day. 3. The listing made it seem as if this was a very private house on a large, rural property however, that is not the case. The house is literally 15 feet in front of the owners house. There are buffalo tours beginning at 10 am and the tour groups meet in front of the owners house, touring throughout the property. At times the tour groups are right outside the dining room window. Overall the stay was fine but the listing was dishonest. I would not have stayed there had I known about these issues.

Response from Leo:
Dear Jill, I am so sorry. Please allow me to explain and also to offer you a refund. It is so critically important to me that my guests are happy and satisfied and you'll see from the reviews that all of them have been for four years, you sadly came when it was a very unusual situation, and I will try explain and make it up to you. You were here when I had far more helpers than usual. Usually I have two, and they only go in the basement to get supplies. I didn't realize they were going in there and had no idea they were playing piano. I've never heard of or seen any of them smoke marijuana, but there were skunks spraying almost every night, and that smells to a lot of people like marijuana. If any of them were, I will make sure that never happens again. I love all my helpers and they've been wonderful, and I don't think they were doing that, but what matters is that you weren't happy. I want to offer you half your stay in refund, it doesn't make up for a stay that you weren't 100% happy about. If you read all the other reviews for the house for 4 years previous to yours, they are almost all 5 stars and they could not be more positive, because of that I am a Super Host. This has never happened before, and it will never happen again, and I am very very sorry!

This was the perfect place for our family! We were travelling with three kids (ages 7, 3 & 2) and my parents. We loved the rustic cabin and the space we had to walk the trails and admire the bison. It was a great get-away.

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Leo's ranch. The guest house is spacious, clean, and comfortable. The wood-fired hot tub was heaven to come back to after a long day of hiking around the area, surrounded by the sounds of nature as the sun set. We enjoyed playing the guitar in the living room too! And of course, the view of the mountains can't be beat. Leo is friendly and helpful, and very knowledgeable about animals (particularly the buffalo) if you want to know more about the wildlife of this beautiful area. Guests can attend a tour of the buffalo ranch for free, which we really enjoyed. I hope we can make it back out someday!

Leo's place was amazing. Waking up to the sounds of the buffalo and sites of the surrounding mountains was extremely refreshing and relaxing. The house was perfect for what we needed with a little added bonus in the wood fired hot tub. Leo and his ranch hands were so accommodating and friendly. Words cannot express! Our two families had an experience of a lifetime and will be forever grateful for it. Our kids will be telling their kids about this trip someday! Thanks Leo!
