About this listing

Tropical Hideaway is a charming Hawaii-style studio apartment in a lush garden setting, with ocean views, a salt swimming pool with waterfall, & private hot tub--just three minutes away from fabulous snorkeling, kayaking, diving & dolphin experiences. Hawaii accommodation tax of 13.42% is included in the price--the room rate is $120/night.

The space

The Studio has an ocean view (we are 2.5 miles above the shoreline) as well as lovely garden views. It features a covered outdoor patio with private hot tub, dining area, and gas fired BBQ. There is a new $1000 Serta Perfect Sleeper queen bed, double futon couch with memory foam topper, fully equipped kitchenette (refrigerator, toaster oven, 2 burner hot plate, microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, utensils, dishes, etc.) with filtered drinking water, plus an indoor dining area, cable, Smart TV/DVD, high speed wireless internet, and speaker with adapter for mobile devices. Cell service is available. A half bath and dressing area are inside, and a private outdoor shower (hot and cold water) is adjacent to the hot tub. There is also a washer and dryer near the Studio.

There is a private yard with herb garden, and guests share access to the remaining gardens and pool area with the two permanent residents and occasional guests. The pool is a chemical-free salt pool. There are cats on the property but have never been in the Studio unit to keep it allergy-free.

The Studio is screened in the Hawaiian style (no glass), so as to be open to the tropical outdoor setting, pleasant breezes and nature's wonders. We also supply beach chairs, boogie boards, coolers, some snorkel gear, beach towels and straw mats.

Guest access

This wonderful location is three minutes from the best snorkeling on the island, with wild dolphins and turtles as well. It is in a lush, tropical area, filled with fruit trees and gardens--private and rural, yet within easy driving distance of a variety of cultural sites and natural wonders. There are several quality restaurants, organic produce stands, and a grocery store nearby. There are also a variety of convenience stores within a short driving distance, and you are only 30 minutes away from the heart of Kailua-Kona. Volcano National Park is a 1.5 hour drive.

Interaction with guests

I like to greet the guests and show them around. I'm available for questions and if they need anything, and otherwise I give them privacy.

Other things to note

During the summer rainy season there are coqui frogs. We manage them so that they are usually at a distance. Coquis are common around most of the island.

The Hideaway was a gem. It's equipped with anything you might need and many thoughtful touches. It was a great spot from which to explore Big Island and just minutes away from fabulous snorkeling.

Kathy was an amazing, attentive host that gave us privacy, yet she was available if we needed anything. The space was incredible! Clean, bright, airy and cozy. Kathy lives above you, but she stays on the other side of her house as to not disturb you with footsteps above. The grounds were lush with jungle plants and flowers that made it a true private oasis! The salt water pool was a great escape on crowded beach days. We loved the organic clean nature of the space. Ivy the gardener was a lovely presence and fun to chat with. Painted Church is within walking distance and two step is a five minute drive! Roosters and dogs barking at night were the only downside, but we turned on the box fan and put ear plugs in and drifted into dreams, only to wake up to another one at Kathy's place! We will be back for sure!

Great little get away in the jungle! Only few minutes from shops and around 25 minutes to Kona town. Perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and escape to the country. Amazing snorkelling inly 5 minutes drive away, we even saw some turtles! Hot tube was a God send after a long flight. Highly recommend this BnB

We were looking forward to a non-conventional rustic hideaway for a few days but we just couldn't get past the bug situation. The mosquitos were relentless so we couldn't use the outdoor patio area and we literally had to jog from the shower to the door to avoid getting bit. We encountered some other pests as well. Overall, very secluded and the groundskeeper was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Great place for the more outdoorsy folk! Good location too.

Response from Kathleen:
Will, I am very sorry that you were not happy with your experience at Tropical Hideaway. Since I was away during your visit, I spoke with Ivy, the resident gardener, who greeted you and was there to make sure that your stay was enjoyable. She told you to let her know if anything needed attention, and when she checked in with you, you said that everything was fine. When I showed her your review, she mentioned that you hadn’t lit the citronella candles or the citronella torch, which would have helped dispel mosquitoes in the patio and shower area. September is usually our hottest and rainiest month, which means that there are more insects than usual. There is a black light mosquito zapper just above the patio, and we have traps on the property to reduce breeding of mosquitoes. Other guests have not had this problem, so maybe you both are what we call “mosquito attractors.” Using the citronella candles, the mosquito coils, the citronella torch and the fans would have helped a lot. The tropics has insects, and especially in a rural area filled with gardens and vegetation. Ivy and the cleaner both said that there were food crumbs all over and grease in the pans and on the dishes when you left. That will definitely attract insects, so keeping the place clean also would have reduced any insects inside.

We loved staying at the Tropical Hideaway, great location away from all the hustle and bustle but easily accessible to everything. Great beach near by and friendly hosts. The whole experience was very relaxing and we would 100% go back.

My husband and I have stayed at the Tropical Hideaway twice, first in February 2013 and just recently in June 2016. We absolutely love it there and consider it a home away from home—the breathtaking surroundings, the outdoor shower and the hot tub, the screened windows that let you feel like you are outdoors at all times, the cute studio that has pretty much everything we need, and proximity to the best snorkeling spot on the island. Kathy is a delightful host who is very resourceful and attentive, yet also respectful of your privacy at the same time. We booked a guided dolphin snorkel tour with her, which was just lovely. She showed us her favorite local spots to swim with wild dolphins and educated us on etiquette and safety. Even though the dolphins did not make an appearance that particular morning, Kathy sharing her knowledge from decades of experience and giving us a detailed snorkeling tour of Two Step was well worth it—and thanks to her tutelage, we were able to spot and swim with dolphins every day after that :) I should also mention that Kathy is also an incredible photographer so make sure to check out her work as well! Overall, we can’t say enough great things about our experience with Kathy and the Tropical Hideaway—really can’t wait to come back and stay a third time!

Very beautiful and private island hideaway! We enjoyed waking up to the birds and going to sleep to the sounds of the frogs. The outdoor shower, hot tub and dipping pool were so much fun. Staying here reconnects you with nature in such a positive and inspirational way. Plus a very quick drive to the best snorkeling on the island; two step! Kathy was a great host and very accommodating.

I've had a love affair with Hawaii since I first lived on Maui in the '60s. I am thrilled to be able to offer a vacation rental in the Captain Cook/Honaunau area, which is my favorite place to live. I love to swim every morning, often with dolphins. My passion is photography, and I film and photograph dolphins, whales, turtles, etc. underwater, as well as landscapes and black and white infrared photography.
