About this listing

The space

Villa Cocobolo is located within Senderos de Paz – Paths of Peace, a 7.5 acre oasis, 55 yards above sea level and just 150 yards from the beautiful beach of Playa Manzanillo and a nice walk or quick drive to the breathtaking beach of Playa Hermosa.

I purchased the land in 2001 and began gardening, planting and reforesting in 2004. The property has transformed from vines and brush for cows into walking trails and gardens with over 30 different type of native trees within half an acre (2000 meters) around the villas.

I built my home, Villa Pochote, in 2007 and shortly added Villa Cocobolo in 2008 for guest and associates.

At Villa Cocobolo you will find the peace and tranquility that you are looking for in your trip to Costa Rica. It is surrounded by the rare Costa Rican Cocobolo hardwood tree as well as the renowned Pochote. The house is built in the loft style with second floor windows offering ocean, sunset, and mountain views. The bathroom and the bedroom are both located upstairs, and the bedroom’s sliding glass doors open to a private balcony allowing ocean views, and monkey and bird watching from the comfort of your bed.

The kitchen and entertaining areas are downstairs and have three patios, two of which are accessed by sliding glass doors for more ocean viewing and garden access.

Villa Cocobolo can accommodate 2 adults with children or possibly 3 adults.

Built and designed by the owner in August of 2008 the home has vaulted ceilings of Pochote beams with laurel wood paneling and the verandas, patios, stairs, door and window frames are all accented in teak.

Villa Cocobolo has a fully equipped kitchen, comes completely furnished, and is surrounded by lush gardens, white gravel walkways, wrought iron gates for added privacy and private parking, pressurized hot/cold water, SKY/cable TV, wireless satellite internet, cleaning service, gardener and laundry facilities and/or service if needed.

Take time to walk along the trails of our 7 acre property...look for coatis, anteaters, jaguarundis, white face and howler monkeys, various bird species, and iguanas...or find one of our sitting areas and just watch and listen to the ocean.

Our staff can help with any questions or needs, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your stay with us...

THE BEACHES....

Because of rock reefs surrounding the entrance to Playa Manzanillo, this beach has it all. Here you can surf, snorkel, swim, kayak, fish, beach comb, and at the end of the day enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets the Nicoya Peninsula has to offer. The best part about Manzanillo beach is many days the only footprints you will find will be your own.

A few years ago Playa Hermosa was basically unknown, but recently discovered by surfers tired of the crowds and congestion of Santa Teresa, this beach is becoming increasingly more popular for tourists and surfers. Playa Hermosa lives up to its name and is truly beautiful offering great waves for surfers, swimming and beachcombing on a long and wide un-crowded beach.

To truly capitalize on all the peninsula has to offer, a car or 4 wheeler is a must, but still many of our guests prefer to walk the old beach road to Playa Hermosa enjoying the quiet and slow pace - stopping at the tide pools, private beaches, the waterfall, and always returning with stories of seeing more monkeys and iguanas than people.

THE SURF....

Yes, there is surf. A short drive south are the more popular surf spots of Playa Carmen (Mal Pais) and Santa Teresa, but just a few minutes away in Manzanillo and Playa Hermosa you can find waves for all levels of surfing (reef, point breaks, beach breaks, river mouths) – beginner to advanced – with crowd and attitude free, consistent surf.

For any surf questions feel free to contact the owner who has over 25 years surfing experience.

We can also set-up surf lessons with qualified instructors.

THE FISHING....

Manzanillo and north to the Bongo River is an area famous for fishing. You can go local and try your hand at hand-line fishing or bring your own gear and head out to the reefs at low tide. You may get lucky and hook sea bass, snook, red snapper, or a rooster. A quick run north will get you to The Bongo which is legendary for its fishing due to its river mouth - a great place to catch snook, just ask a local family who bought a car they call “robalo” meaning “snook” in Spanish. All the money they earned to buy the car came from selling their snook/robalo catches from the Bongo.

We can also book fishing tours for you – just ask.

Beautiful place in a very quiet location with a scenic view. Perfect if you're looking for calmness and peace. Just make sure you get some wheels since the walking around can be tough to do in a regular basis.

Staying with Trey at Senderos de Paz was an incredible experience! Prior to our check in, Trey was easy to communicate with providing great directions (which is important if you've never been to the area). He went above and beyond and let us drop our luggage off earlier which was extremely helpful because we arrived in the morning :) The house we stayed in was Villa Cocobolo (one of a few on the property). We found it to be the perfect mix of privacy while not being too isolated. Villa Cocobolo had its own private entrance and parking space beyond a security gate. The area is very safe, but its nice to have a bit of extra security when traveling. By far my favorite part of the space was its unique character. You can tell that a lot of thought went into its design. It felt like home away from home :) There are really high ceilings and you can see green out of every window from where ever you are inside. Strategically placed mirrors also give you an ocean view while showering (one of Trey's other good ideas). The kitchen and baths were very clean, the air conditioning was cold, and everything you could need was on site. Trey also left us some coffee and filtered water and it was lovely to wake up and have coffee on one of the exterior balconies looking out into the jungle and towards the ocean. The pictures do not do this place justice and you should be pleasantly surprised. At first, it might look like you're far from the ocean and mostly in the trees. At least that's what I thought. But once you're there.. its not like this at all. I felt very connected to the ocean and the sunsets were really great. The whole property is set on a big hill and the pool is a nice refresher. For us, staying in downtown Santa Teresa was really busy and kind of defeated the purpose of going somewhere to experience nature. Senderos de Paz is the perfect mix of close enough yet far enough. While you're there, make sure to go to Atardecer Dorado down the hill for some sunset ceviche and cerveza's. Trey and Jacqueline made us feel like we were part of the family and were extremely welcoming. I am very much looking forward to the next time I can come for a visit!

I'm a surfer/traveler who stumbled upon Mal Pais and Santa Teresa in 1993 and never could quite let go. I made the Manzanillo/Playa Hermosa area my home in 2001 and have never looked back - great waves, incredible natural setting, and interesting people - I've found my paradise.

I've been fortunate to have lived all over the US, travel the roads with rock bands, drive through Central America by Jeep, live in Europe and Japan - all the while surfing - but I have been more fortunate to have had total strangers open their homes, hearts, family and cultures to me and show me things I could have never learned on my own. I'll never be able to thank them for their kindness and teachings, but I can repay them by passing what I can on to others. There's nothing I enjoy more thansharing what I've found here in this small, but unique corner of the world.
