The space

Manesty is a beautiful three bedroom attached farmhouse cottage in Borrowdale, in the heart of the Lake District.

The cottage dates back to mediaeval times and has retained a wealth of original features, from a great slate table in the hallway to exposed beams and meat hooks in the kitchen and the original thumb-latch doors. We've furnished it in a country cottage style, with antiques and pretty bedspreads. The cottage now has a fully reburbished kitchen, complete with wood burning stove and underfloor heating. It is perfect for a family or a group of friends of up to 7.

***Please note, except for last minute bookings, Manesty is let on a weekly basis (Saturday-Saturday) between Easter and October. But do message us for a special offer or last minute deal - we always have great discounts between September and March.***

THE COTTAGE
There are 3 bedrooms: 2 double rooms and 1 family room with a double and a single bed. There is a bathroom/wc on the first floor and a shower room/wc on the ground floor.

There is a cosy traditional sitting room at the front of the cottage looking out over the Borrowdale valley.

The big country kitchen has a comfy sitting area so you can enjoy the fire in comfort, and a farmhouse table for sociable dinners. There's a dishwasher and all the cooking equipment you'll need. The washing machine and tumble drier is in separate utility room.

Outside an old garden gate leads to a gravelled area with seating, lawn and panoramic views of Borrowdale. There's parking for one car by the cottage and more off road parking nearby.

Guest access

Guests have their own parking space, entrance, and garden/lawn area with table and chairs and have exclusive use of the house. They are welcome to explore our small wooded fell side behind the cottage. They have access to a shared utility room with extra tourist information, games, puzzles, books and portable bbq.

We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub in our little wood, which can be booked for a day at a time for an additional cost by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.

Interaction with guests

Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.

The neighborhood

Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with it's teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you the 5 miles into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.

We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 12 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate. We're at the foot of Catbells, which is well known as the Lake's favourite beginner's fellwalk, but there are also challenging day hikes up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) or relaxing rambles by the lake or in the woods.

Getting around

From Easter to October a bus (77/77A, the 'Honister Rambler') goes from Manesty's front gate to Keswick. All year round the 78 goes to Keswick from Grange, less than a mile away and there is also a boat, the 'Keswick Launch' which picks up from High Brandlehow and Lodore landing stages, both about a mile from Manesty.

From Keswick, there is a bus to our nearest railway station Penrith which is well served by high speed trains (less than 3 hours to London).

And of course, you can bring your car. We have off road parking.

Except for very last minute or off peak (November - Easter) bookings, Manesty is let Saturday-Saturday. We offer great discounts for off peak weeks, so please get in touch for a quote.

Please do not exceed the maximum occupancy of 7 guests. When you book we will ask for the number of guests staying and their names and addresses - we are happy for you to change these, but just let us know! We do have another cottage for 8 (not currently listed) so if you would like 4 bedrooms, let us know and we will list it.

The price includes bed linen, towels and electricity and the first basket of logs.

Our accommodation is no smoking (both inside and in the gardens/grounds) and pet free.

We don't include any cleaning fees in our prices, instead we ask you to leave your accommodation clean and tidy at the end of your stay. On your arrival we ask for a small returnable deposit (£10 per person) which we hold while you are with us. At the end of your stay we return this after a quick check. We would like to do this deposit through airbnb but their minimum deposit is ($100/£70) which we think is too much! If you would prefer to pay a cleaning fee instead, please let us know and we can arrange this.

We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub, which can be booked for a day at a time by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.

Finally, please let us know of any anything you need or any problems you might have while you are here. We want you to have a great stay with us and letting us know of any issues as soon as they arise means we can sort them out as soon as possible instead of their dragging on through your holiday. Feel free to ask us about great places to walk and visit while you are here - our family has been at Manesty for six generations so we should be able to point you in the right direction!

A wonderful retreat in the stunning and beautiful surroundings of The Lakes. Alan was extremely helpful and friendly. He showed us everything we needed to know within the cottage...very thorough! Communication was swift with Alice as we had car trouble and had to delay our arrival date. The kitchen area was huge with eat-in area, the upstairs bathroom had a newly fitted shower and sink with great water pressure...and always hot. Thank you Alan, Cheryl and Alice for everything during our stay!

Highly recommended Lovely cottage. We just really enjoy the week we spent at the Lake district and Manesty. Alan & Cheryl are really helpful landlord. Especially Cheryl (We got more opportunities to talk to her.) , when you need help (No matter it is about where to go, how to go or even you just need some bin liners), she's always give you the most efficient support.

Allen met us as we pulled in and took us to our cottage. He explained how everything worked and we settled right in. The scenery was amazing and he had information on a dozen hikes that we could take right from our door as well as restaurants and things to do close by. We had a wonderful time and will definitely stay there again if we come back to the area.

Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England.

If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to.
