NOTE: We usually accept rentals of less than 1 week only within 14 days of request, or in between 2 longer rentals, as most of our requests are for 1 week to several months.
PRIVATE ENTRANCE, PRIVATE ROOM, PRIVATE BATH
With a private entrance, you can come and go as you please—more like a junior studio than a private room. Room includes a very comfortable queen-sized bed, nightstand, and desk with high-speed internet hookup (though no TV).
Full-sized private bath includes a combination tub-shower and large white-tiled counter. A microwave is on the counter, and a mini-fridge on the floor; we have an electric kettle, coffee maker, and toaster available too; let us know what you want and we'll have them waiting for you!
Access to the rest of the house is not included.
Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side). Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (other side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.
Energy-saving heating system includes your own in-room thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. Bedding includes luxury all-cotton bed linens, a down comforter, 4 regular pillows and 2 European large square pillows. And of course there's an ample supply of towels. Please bring your own alarm clock and toiletries, and a beach towel if you'll want to take towels out of the room.
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes. There are also reasonably priced long-term bike rentals on the Stanford campus.
Our studio is walking or easy biking distance to Stanford, Palo Alto & the Sand Hill Road venture capital corridor. By car, we’re only 5 minutes from Hwy 280. You can take the train from SFO airport—not fast, but very inexpensive! BART directly from SFO to Millbrae Caltrain station (approx 15 min and $4); train to Menlo Park (under 30 minutes approx $4); and we are right down Santa Cruz Ave from the station (20-minute brisk walk or very short taxi ride). Less than 30 minutes’ drive from both San Francisco & San Jose airports, in normal traffic.
WALK TO STANFORD
Per (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps, the walking distance to mid-campus is 1.9 miles, 37 minutes. Walking distance to Stanford Hospital or clinics is 1.2 miles or 23 minutes. The Golf Course is even closer :)
We’re conveniently located on the main street of Menlo Park, but tucked back from the street in a private courtyard with fountain. Outdoor patio seating is not included, but we hope you’ll enjoy the hummingbirds, finches and chickadees attracted by our various bird feeders. Depending on the season, you might see birds-of-paradise, wisteria, roses, and lavender. And help yourself to the figs, persimmons, loquats and/or lemons when they are in season.
West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive (approx 3 miles) from the Stanford Dish walk, a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views; the entire loop from Alpine Road is a wonderful 5-mile walk. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.
We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for an out-of-towner wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.

CLEAN AND SMOKE-FREE: Our guests appreciate how clean and fresh our studio is. In order to maintain this environment for all guests, we have a strict NO SMOKING policy, no exceptions. We also ask you to respect our no shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). We have extra slippers if you like!
RECYCLING: And Menlo Park is a very green city; we encourage recycling, and easily meet our city's target of over 50% waste recycled.

4-6 nights, we accept reservations up to 1 months in advance.

LEGAL INTERNET USE ONLY: Comcast, our high-speed ISP, expressly forbids illegal downloads using bit-torrent or similar technology. Unfortunately, there have been some issue with this in the past, so must ask our guests to agree to this policy in writing upon arrival.
My husband Steve and I are long-time local residents; I was born in Palo Alto, so a real native and Steve is from England. We were high-school sweethearts (his dad was at SLAC for a year), then we reconnected 20+ years later & got married! Now we're empty nesters with 4 kids in our blended family, all living in California. We have a successful home-based marketing agency, so we’re around most of the time for your convenience and security.
We love hosting and also traveling-- to my husband's native UK (lots of family & friends still there). Have been to China, Cuba, Mexico and much of western Europe. Hoping to travel more in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
We love taking road trips in the Western US (our Tesla is our biggest splurge!), and exploring big cities, especially NYC & LA. Our favorite trip of all was a family stay in New Orleans-- fabulous music, food, history & people!
Since Airbnb is asking, the "5 things we can't live without" are (not necessarily in this order): movies & music, exercise, NPR & BBC, our kids & our cats.
We are Michael Pollan converts and think his 7-word food philosophy sums it up beautifully: "eat food (as opposed to food-like products), not too much, mostly plants." We buy local, sustainable, organic as much as we can.
