Interaction with guests

I could provide you the information (websites) with all the required information for your stay in Vilnius to be a memorable one.

The neighborhood

Užupis (Belarusian: Зарэчча, Polish: Zarzecze, Russian: Заречье) is a neighborhood in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, largely located in Vilnius' old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Užupis means "the other side of the river" in the Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River; the name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. The district has been popular with artists for some time, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemic and laissez-faire atmosphere. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis). Since the first of November 2014 Jaap van Ark is president of republic Užupis.

Getting around

Some of Uzupis’ other sites include St. Ann’s Church, one of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius and in Lithuania. Small in size but an incredible example of Gothic architecture. Another is Bernadine’s cemetery, one of the three oldest in the city, which dates to the 18th century and has over 14,000 burial sites.

Be sure to check out the Old Yards of Uzupis and the Banks of the River Vilnele. Make a trip to the Bartholomew Church, not so much of a stunner but perfect for spectacular views of the city. The Vilnius panoramas from Uzupis are marvelous in general. A must-see site is the Angel of Uzupis Statue. An 8m tall statue of an angel blowing a trumpet and standing on an egg.

Adding to the charm, the district also has a somewhat unexplainable but seemingly genuine fascination of and devotion to Frank Zappa.
For those who want a break from the noisy, touristy Old Town and want some a more relaxed, creative and humorous scene, take a trip Uzupis. A former major of Vilnius, Artūras Zuokas, even lives in Užupis and frequently takes part in the Republic’s events.

Vaidas is very nice and always helpful in case you have any questions. The flat is rather small, but absolutely adequate for one (and maybe two) person(s). It is situated right in Uzupis, which is a beautiful, alterative neighboorhood. Also it is in walking distance to the Old Town (10 min).
