Amenities

Description

The space

Families or groups can rent with Dar 91 Tlata for additional space.
Zhuzh has a beautiful open plan living room/kitchen (simply equipped), a spacious double bedroom, a shower room and a mezzanine chillout area – and a stunning, secluded roof terrace…the highest in our part of town.

Guest access

All bedding and towels (not beach towels) are included. We also provide you with essential kitchen items, and our prices include bread, croissants and other breakfast ingredients, delivered fresh to your door each morning.

To help you switch off, we have no TV but there is an i-pod/mp3 speakers and Wi-Fi. There is also an iron and ironing board and hair dryer if required.

Our helpful and friendly staff can cook and/or deliver evening meals on request, can organise for guests’ laundry to be washed, and can babysit (all at additional cost, paid locally). They can also accompany you on trips to the souks, local hammam and to nearby country markets (the latter must be arranged in advance and relies on guests hiring a car or travelling on public transport).

We have a travel cot and bedding and provide guests with suggestions of activities they and their children may enjoy in Essaouira.

We send all guests our own guide to the house and Essaouira, which includes advice on how to handle cultural differences, ideas for things to do and our recommendations for the best restaurants, shopping etc.

Interaction with guests

We split our time between the UK and Morocco, so we may or may not be present during your stay. Either way, we work hard to help you prepare for your stay, especially if it is your first time. We are always on hand to answer your questions before and after you book, and send all our guests our in-depth guide to Essaouira, which helps you get a good sense of the place and receives positive reviews from all our guests.

We are happy to organise airport transfers and help you book local activities; unlike many accommodation providers we take no commission when making any arrangements with third parties.

The neighborhood

Our neighbourhood, Chbanat, is a part of the ancient medina famous for its textile workshops, where weavers spin their yarn and create beautiful handwoven blankets, throws and scarves on traditional looms. It is one of the most unspoilt and authentically Moroccan quarters in the town. You could say it's rough around the edges....but it's safe too.

Getting around

Essaouira is accessible by Supratours bus, grand taxi or hire car from Marrakech, Agadir and other cities. We are happy to book taxis; you pay the driver and we take no commission. Dar 91 is easy to find (our house guide includes a map) and there is parking near Bab Maarakech - about five minutes' walk. Small taxis for trips to the beach and elsewhere in the new town are found near Bab Doukkala, and horse carriage taxis are also nearby.

Other things to note

We are strongly committed to sustainable tourism and are passionate about the need for holiday providers, especially in developing countries – and their guests – to do what they can to help the local community wherever possible. Since we opened in 2006 we have given a minimum of 10% of our profits to local good causes.

In 2012 we set up our own charity, Project 91, to help young people in Essaouira improve their job prospects, and continue to give 10% of all profits from Dar 91 to it. We raise money for Project 91 in a variety of ways, including via our own campaign, Leave Your Wardrobe in Morocco, through which our and others' guests can donate unwanted clothes and other items for sale in the Project 91 shop, with 100% of the profits going to the charity.

Projects funded by Project 91 so far include free English lessons for local young people, two funded placements at hairdressing school, and support for various local families struggling to continue funding their children through secondary school. We also contribute towards a dental hygiene project in the countryside near Essaouira.

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 1PM

We ask all guests to respect the Moroccan culture, and provide guidance on how to do so in our house guide.

If either or both members of a couple are Moroccan, we are required by law to ask for proof of marriage.

We loved our stay at Dar Zhuzh. The place is stylish, cosy and clean. Simo was very friendly and always there if we had a question. Halima made sure we had breakfast delivered every day and both made us feel like home. I hope to come back soon. The communication with the owner Jeremy worked perfect, too. Thanks a lot to all the people at Dar Zhuzh!

Essaouira is an amazing place with its traffic free Medina & bustling vibrancy. However we were disappointed to find that although the entrance to the apartment was within the Medina, all the windows overlooked the main road outside the Medina walls. This meant constant traffic noise from buses, lorries, cars, etc as well as having a noisy garage, vehicle preparation outfit opposite. We found the living area very chilly even during the day with the internal temperature rarely rising above 16 C. Loved its location except for the traffic noise & had excellent communication with the owner throughout our two week stay.

Response from Jeremy:
I'm happy that Tony and Christina enjoyed Essaouira...and sorry that they felt let down by the location of the apartment. This is the first time in almost 10 years that anyone has complained about it...most people love the height and airiness of the apartment, and although it does look outwards from the medina, with views of the new town, this is not without its charms; the road is no more noisy than one would expect in an urban location. In January Essaouira can certainly get chilly (this year more than most); we provide an electric radiator to 'take the edge off', along with lots of blankets. We were, sadly, unable to build a fireplace in the living room but there's one upstairs in the bedroom, which is great for cosy evenings.

Great place, lovely homely feel with some fab decor. Location is perfect for exploring the medina and beach, markets on the doorstep. The apartment has everything we needed for a comfortable stay, and the roof terrace is another brilliant feature to the apartment - spectacular views across the city roof tops. We stayed with our 10 month old son and had a lovely stay.

Our second stay at Dar Zhuzh and we enjoyed it once again. The house is comfortable, stylish and just as described on the site. Communication with Jeremy and Paolo before and during our trip (by email this time) was good. In Essaouira, Radouane, Simo and Halima were very helpful and welcoming. This is a lovely house in a lively, 'local' feeling neighbourhood, handy for the harbour, beach and shops/markets/cafes.

Firstly, Essaouira is a wonderful place and I highly recommend it to anyone. Don't bother with high heels though ladies, lots of steps and the streets are uneven! Secondly, we felt it was a real privilege to stay at Dar 91, within the walls of the medina. Again, there are loads of steps up to the apartment, but it's totally worth it. A mix of traditional Moroccan tiling and quirky modern touches, we absolutely loved it. And felt relaxed and at home immediately. It has everything you need for your stay and having breakfast delivered every morning meant we fully relaxed and went at our own pace. We received a handy info pack beforehand so felt prepared and the house manager was on hand for any questions. Paolo, one of the owners, was also there and was absolutely lovely. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back. Thank you!

Dar 91 “Zhuzh” was perfect! We where met at the bus station by Mohammad he kindly showed us to Dar 91 and made sure we were perfectly situated before he departed. Shortly after we received a call/visit from Radouane (speaks great english & french) he gave us a map all informed us on all the things to do in Essaouira. Both of Radouane & Mohammad were beyond hospitable and made our stay even more pleasant. Dar 91 is conveniently located inside the Media and is very close to the main “market street.” It is very artsy and cleverly decorated with a vintage/local Essaorira Moroccan motif. Our favorite thing to do at Dar 91 was have breakfast & watch the sunset from the terrace. The pictures really do not do it justice and it really does overlook the entire medina. The house has everything you need to cook a nice Tagine, includes plenty of coffee & tea and breakfast delivered to you daily. Dar 91 is also linked to a local non-profit organization in Essaouira that helps needy local families. Just outside the house you can find the non-profit’s local art shop and thrift shop both of which are filled with great stuff. Thank you for everything!

I fell in love with Essaouira more than 10 years ago, and have been renting out the Dar 91 apartments, having renovated them from scratch, since 2006. Essaouira is a beautiful place, and its people are genuinely warm and welcoming. It's important to me that you leave here having 'clicked' with Morocco and found a new rhythm. My team - house manager Simo and cleaner Halima - will do whatever they can to ensure you have a great stay. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
