Galkadawala , was discovered in 2006, a land deforested, consumed and denuded by chena (slash and burn) cultivation. Our aim was to transform a barren patch to a jungle habitation; creating a haven for guests to enjoy in a setting where Man and Nature live in harmony with each other; in which animals, birds, reptiles and insects also have their due place. The story of success is vindicated as the area abounds with endemic creatures of all types, including 133 of the 453 avian species, 50 of the 230 species of butterflies, and 88 varieties of Ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka which are recorded at Galkadawala.
Galkadawala, is constructed mainly by reusing “used building materials” like used timber, bricks, roofing tiles, even discarded industrial trunking.
By design, consumption of power has been reduced considerably by sensitive use of natural light and ventilation for cooling.
As there are Forest pathways and a network of lakes and irrigation canals in surrounding area it is ideal for trekking or bird watching.

If you like to be amid nature, to be like Tarzan and Jane, to watch out for animals, you have to go to Galakadawala! We had a great relaxing beautiful time and a lasting memory! There is a stunningly beautiful lake just a little walk behind the lodge. In the village it seems like the time is to be left behind. We totally recommend! Thank you for being our host!

Response from Maulie:
Dear Rahel, Thank you so much for appreciating Galkadawala. I greatly value it. In the description of Airbnb I have mentioned that the price is for BB and lunch or dinner is US$10 per meal. The meals are home cooked and it is time consuming . Sri Lankan food takes along time to prepare if done in the correct manner : ) . Also we use the best condiments. Thank you so much. Best regard, Maulie.

It's not often that you look forward to going somewhere, and when you arrive, it's better than what you could have imagined I think the magic of Maulie's place is that, until you've been there, it is beyond imagination I spent 3 days there, relaxing, feasting. Days revolved around 3 stellar meals. Sometimes it rained. I was happy: I could read in the bungalow's wonderful spaces. It was sunny, I went on a magical walk to see elephants, I bathed in the tank. Nights I went to sleep in constellations of fireflies, feeling like on a voyage through the trees. Maulie was a wonder. Fascinating, friendly, she is visionary in what she has done. And, how she does things. I look forward to coming back one day. Thank you

Dear Will, You are too kind. The success of Galkadawala depends lot on the guests who visit us. But you were exceptional; in understanding Galkadawala. All the very best to you. Do hope we will meet again.

This is a wonderful, memorable place to stay. We had no issues with critters in our room, except for a small lizard in the bathroom, which was more funny than anything else. You are well taken care of by Maulie and her staff -- breakfast is served when you wish it, and the night before you can request a driver for the next day to visit any of the sites you're interested in. Maulie's drivers don't have great English, but it's better than my Sinhala, plus they're safe drivers and it's easy enough communicating essentials. The gentleman who took us to Kaudulla National Park had a knack for finding wildlife and minimizing our exposure to other Jeeps. I see criticism on another site that Maulie's dinners are expensive, and I have to roll my eyes at that. It's not much at all compared to what you would pay at home, and the food is delicious and elegantly served. Breakfast is included and it was the best of our trip. Maulie herself is a fascinating person, engaged in an admirable jungle reclamation project that happens to include amazing hospitality.
