Modern Accord Depot is our contemporary reinvention of a historic 1902 train depot from the legendary New York, Ontario & Western Railway, now a 2 bedroom / 2 bath home with studio and caboose, beautifully positioned just off Main Street in the idyllic Hudson Valley hamlet of Accord, NY – a perfect weekend getaway for couples and families or a creative retreat for artists of all disciplines.

The space
In this singular property, turn-of-the-century character meets 21st century convenience.

From the historic entry dormer to the 1902 ticket window and waiting room benches, from the barn door made from salvaged boards with vintage graffiti to the 1920 baggage room’s original beams and steel rafter ties, from the generous foyer bench adapted from station agent Mike Palmer’s desk to the 1940 caboose resting on 100 feet of train track, to be here is to be transported to the romantic heyday of American train travel.

You’re simultaneously thrust forward via a modern redesign completed in 2019 and led by architect Marica McKeel, an eye-popping transformation that features a double height glass addition housing a neon staircase and sitting area, a stylish and colorful kitchen with Smeg appliances and bespoke table for 12, an open and airy studio with mirrors and sprung Marley floor, a luxurious primary bedroom with built-in platform bed, storage and desk, and an immediately iconic bunk room inspired by a train sleeping car, featuring six private sleeping pods in a dynamic design.

Whether you're getting your om on in the studio or cooking with friends in the contemporary kitchen, dreaming up ideas for your novel in the hammock or devouring one in the glass reading nook, making s'mores over the fire pit with the kids or enjoying a romantic brunch for two in the caboose, this is an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Neighborhood highlights

Originally named Port Jackson, Accord (pronounced ACK-ord by the locals) is a 256-household hamlet in Ulster County, nestled in the Shawangunk Mountains amongst the picturesque towns and villages of High Falls, Stone Ridge, Rosendale, New Paltz and Woodstock, and the city of Kingston, New York’s original capital.

We’ve lived in Accord for 10 years, and the natural beauty of the area truly can’t be overstated, with the 22,000-acre Minnewaska State Park Preserve hosting hiking, boating, scuba diving, equestrian use, climbing and bouldering, Ashokan Reservoir offering fishing and logging (with permit), Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary where you can meet rescued chickens, cows, pigs and more, and Wallkill Valley Rail Trail offering 22 miles of linear park space for exercise and adventure.

In addition, the area is home to an embarrassment of riches in terms of dining, antiquing and the arts, not to mention the world’s largest garden gnome, which can be seen at Kelder’s Farm and U-pick mini-golf course.

ACCORD The terrific Bluebird Wines & Spirits is a short walk to the end of Main Street toward US-209, and just beyond that and across 209 is the rustic Rose Hill Antiques. A quarter of a mile further south along 209 is the excellent farm market, bakery and greenhouse of Saunderskill Farms, which has been continuously farmed by the Schoonmaker family since 1680 (and, we should note, closes Dec-Mar each year). 2 miles further on Mettacahonts Road, you’ll find Westwind Orchard, which has a terrific farm store and tasting room with house made pizzas and local beers, wines and ciders, as well as the neighboring Arrowood Farm and Brewery and the nearby Stonehill’s Lodging and Libations, which features a terrific restaurant. 2 miles north of the depot on US-209, you’ll fine Stone House Tavern, serving delicious food and drinks in a warm, friendly atmosphere, and the brand new and popular Love Bird Catskills serving box fried chicken dinners & specials.

Nearby HIGH FALLS is home to the iconic Egg’s Nest restaurant, the brand new Ollie’s Pizza, Kitchenette Seafood Shack and The Spy Social Eatery & Bar, as well as the popular High Falls Flea Market on Sundays, lovely shops like Green Cottage (our favorite gift and flower shop in the area), the High Falls Food Co-Op and several local artists’ open studios.

In STONE RIDGE, you’ll discover Lost & Found antiques, Cherries Ice Cream Bar & Grill, Davenport Farms market, Applestone Meat Co (a 24-hr butcher shop), plenty of restaurants including the delicious Hash Food NY breakfast and lunch cafe, Bodacious Bagels, Momiji Sushi, Asia (Asian Fusion & Sushi), Benny’s Pizzeria and the upscale Butterfield restaurant at Hasbrouck House, and a shopping center anchored by Emmanuel’s Marketplace grocery store, with Emmanuel’s Pet-Agree, Dunkin’, Stone Ridge Wine & Spirits and Walgreens.

The quirky and colorful creek-side community of ROSENDALE offers the fantastic local bookshop Postmark Books, a ton of restaurants including the delicious vegetarian Rosendale Cafe, The Tavern at 1850 House Inn, Creekside Bar & Bistro, Soy (Japanese), Garden House (Mediterranean), The Big Cheese (Mediterranean) and The Alternative Baker, a traditional storefront bakery that produces gluten free and vegan artisan baked goods, as well as Rosendale Theatre movie house and performing arts center. High above Main Street is the famous Rosendale Trestle, a 940-foot continuous truss bridge that was opened to the public in 2013, and is truly worth a visit.

The town of ELLENVILLE has several excellent restaurants including Aroma Thyme Bistro, the first Green Certified restaurant in the Hudson Valley, Tony & Nick’s Italian Kitchen, Gaby’s Cafe (Mexican cantina with international flair), Arianna’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, and Trattoria Marbella Italian Steakhouse & Wine Bar, in addition to Barthel’s Farm Market and Creamery, serving homemade Barthel’s Farm ice creams in the summer.

NEW PALTZ, a funky college town, has an energy all its own and offers tons of dining and shopping options, from the famous Main Street Bistro breakfast and lunch diner (if you can get a table!) to the delicious Mexican Kitchen, from Hokkaido Japanese Restaurant to Karma Road organic vegan cafe, from Bacchus Restaurant, Brewery & Billiards to Bangkok Cafe, from Huckleberry eatery and craft cocktails to Anatolia Turkish cuisine. You’ll definitely want to explore Water Street Market, which features a variety of antique shops and clothing boutiques, as well as Main St’s many shops including Cocoon housewares and gifts, Manny’s Art Supplies, Bicycle Depot, Rock and Snow outdoor sports store, two independent book shops, several record shops, chocolate shops and more.

In KINGSTON, you’ll find the nostalgic waterfront district where you can explore the Hudson River Maritime Museum, the Trolley Museum of New York and visit the fantastic Kingston Wine Company, and the magnificent Stockade district featuring many historic Dutch buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a bustling marketplace featuring the fabulous Boitson’s restaurant (with gorgeous outdoor deck), Santa Fe Uptown Mexican restaurant (with plenty of gluten free options), Yum Yum Noodle Bar, Palizzata Italian Restaurant & Marketplace (complete with separate vegan menu), Kingston Candy Bar, Opa! Gyros Greek Restaurant, Lagusta’s Luscious vegan locavore chocolate shop and many wonderful shops including the beautifully curated Rough Draft Bar & Books and Half Moon Books, Rhino Records, Stockade Guitars, bluecashew Kitchen Homestead, Lovefield Vintage Clothing, Traders of Lost Art gift shop, the upscale Exit 19 home goods shop and the spectacular 2-story Kingston Consignments where you’re sure to find treasures untold.
