When Ida invited me to stay with her in NYC (ok, Brooklyn), I thought great! But when I saw her apartment & its location I was bowled over!
Ida and I are friends and informally worked together for a year in Ethiopia on a range of projects, including short courses on Photojournalism for the Masters Students at the School of Journalism at Addis Ababa University where I was an Associate Professor. We also mentored young jewellery designers and an Ethiopian social anthropologist documenting the traditions of his homeplace.
So I wasn't surprised by Ida's well-organized and smoothly run living space. But I was amazed by the location (does it get any better?), the size (VERY large), and by the range of artwork of the other building residents. Do flowers really grow that big & glow in the dark?? Wow.
Urban village with great public transport is my preferred location when I'm on holiday or at home (by the way, I live in Melbourne, Australia) -- I love everything a short walk from my 'home away from home'. At Ida's around the corner was one simple pleasure -- delicious bagels & cream cheese. You also have a choice of close Underground stations, depending on your destination.
Of course, I am a cat-lover, too. So her two cats added an extra-warm dimension to my stay.
Finally, my walk along the banks of the East River (literally steps away) and over the Brooklyn Bridge provided a rich source for my passion of 'travel jewellery': making one's own souvenirs from local (clean) 'trash' to start conversations with laugher or questioning.
I can recommend a stay at Ida's without any reservation. She is a great young woman, well-organized, socially-responsible, helping to make the world a better place. Her apartment is equally amazing.”
